The spacious ones that involve little to no contact! Save room for Jesus, mother mary, all the angels and saints when you dance!

So slow dancing and/or ballroom dancing is unacceptable? I am asking this in all seriousnes.

Ironically, last night my friends invited me to go a college club. And I accepted, I won’t see them for much of the summer seeing as everyone will be going home. One of them asked me to dance with them, although I would’ve been fine doing a regular dance, she proceeded to turn around and do a “freak dancing position”. However during it, I didn’t even feel any lust, didn’t even get a slight erection, and I’d feel rude if I just left. There was no intent to be as lustful… I had a debate with one of my friends whether it was a mortal sin and he agreed with me, that if it matters on the intentions to be a mortal sin.

Now now. as for appropriate dancing… sorry to answer this late. Let’s say they are right about it being a mortal sin even at the slightest. basically slow dancing and all that stuff waltz is all ok. It’s the rubbing of the genitals that can lead to the near occasion of sin. You’ll know because youll feel different.

in my experience, usually the men who entice the women to do the dirty dancing, are also the instigators of the male bachelor parties at strip clubs. While the dancing could be thought of as innocent at first, there are lots of times other issues that need to be addressed such as moral ones. I know pregnant women who were left by their “catholic” husbands so they could attend strip clubs that their friends were going to. It is so important for friends to look after their own friends and choose the best for everyone’s situations. Friends have quite a lot of influence and the innocent party tends to suffer in many instances. relationships get ruined no matter how innocent people think some of these actions are. Love is very delicate and needs thought

I don’t know if it is a sin. The priest from my previous parish was dancing in this lewd manner to lewd music. I don’t think it was very appropriate of him to grind with others in this way, because it is sexually arousing and he was supposed to be chaste. Maybe he was just having fun.

Just because a priest does it does not necessarily mean it is right.

My own experience (and I’m sure experience shared by others) priests may not always demonstrate the best decisions.

Yeah I’ve known of a priest celebrating Mass after drinking two bottles of wine, which is clearly not a good thing (
too much anytime, unless you have a mega high tolerance, but certainly before celebrating Mass)

I think we just have to remember that priests are people too and they can succumb to sin. It does not necessarily mean that they can’t be a priest, but they do have to keep their behaviour in check. The most loving thing we can do for the priest is to uplift him in prayer daily. Many of Jesus’ apostles and followers have not been moral, yet Jesus used them to do His work and they were quite effective. I think he chose these apostles with all their faults, as a representation of the human race, so we could identify with them. No one is perfect. We can’t be the ones to throw the first stone, because none of us is without sin. We should all say a prayer for the priests in our lives and the people whose lives they touch, because they have dedicated their lives to serving others. God bless them.

I’m sorry to have to say this, but this story is extremely scandalous and difficult to believe. It would have been better left unsaid. I just hope that you mad this up and it isn’t true.

Not in a sexual way? No sexual intent? If the definitions given are what actually happens, it is a form of sex – no imitation, no similarity, it IS a sex act, and in my day a popular one (AIDS and herpes had us nervous).

Forgive the graphic language that may ensue. Here is the edited description of “freak dancing” and/or “grinding” from urban dictionary.

Definition 1.
It is when a female places her buttocks (clothed) onto the zipper area of a man’s pants. Then, she dances vigorously.

Definition 2.
Obscene dancing which simulates sex by the grinding the of the genetailia with suggestive sounds/movements. often done to pop or hip hop or rap music

Definition 3.
Also Known As Dirty Dancing. When a girl is rubbing her [bottom] all over a guys [penis] until it comes to the point where he gets a[n] [erection].

I often hit up the clubs, school dances, and the like. This is the main type of dancing of this age. Some say it’s “just dancing”. Though I admit this is at least a venial sin. What if one is doing this type of dancing with no sexual intent and no erection? Also, in another situation, what if I am out at the club, get behind a friend and we dance for about 30 minutes and there is the sexual intent. What is it than? I am curious to what the actual church opinion or the community here at catholic answers has to say on this.
As a dance form alone it is no sin whatsoever. It is up to the people doing it. If there are internal alterive motives it could be a lesser sin (viniel, not mortal), but if it is just dancing and that is the popular style and they are the same person before or after the dance, there is nothing to worry about.

How can it be dancing at all? It’s rubbing of the genital areas together, according to the three definitions above, and it has lots of names, but this year is the first I ever heard anyone call it dancing. I’ve heard of dance fads from the past (20 years ago and a generation before that) that almost reached this level of lewdness, but even those styles stopped short of this behavior. I stopped clubbing around 2001 or so, because I was uncomfortable in clubs, but even then nothing like this was happening. That was just seven years ago (maybe eight or nine), and most of the people dancing would be the same people. All but the youngest must know that this isn’t what dancing looks like. Am I being prudish? I don’t care if I am. By the standards of a wild-living, shock-seeking club regular one scant generation ago, this “dance” would be shocking even at a private party unless it was specifically advertised as an orgy, which was rare in almost all party circles, and people haven’t changed. Not deep down. The basic nature of it is unchanged from when it was classified as a sex act, plain and simple.

Hi Neil!! I have not made that up. I left the parish because his homilies did not equal his behaviour and he was not a good example for my son. Maybe people should stop putting priests on a pedestal and just pray for them because they are an example in not just words but their behaviour.

‘They are the same person before or after the dance’? What’s that supposed to mean?

Exhibiting sexual acts (in a dancing situation) can certainly be a scandalous act (leading others to sin) so at the very least it’s a sin for that alone.

Perhaps you might try reading some of the thoughtful posts on this thread before taking such a dismissive approach to a serious topic. Freak dancing (or dirty dancing as we called it when I was in high school / college) is a far cry from regular dancing.

No… I don’t think I know it. I don’t think its grave matter because well, its all in the fun of dancing. Another to point to make is that just because its more enjoyable doesn’t make it more sinful. I just don’t think its mortal because just imagine confessing it to a priest. I don’t think he’d count that as a sin.

Forgive me father… for I was walking around the club, and this girl started dancing on my private parts, and I got an erection, but I kept going for about 30 minutes because she was so attractive.

Does that sound like a mortal sin to you?
Let say u think it’s a venial sin rather than a mortal sin, then why do it to begin with? ANY sin hurts your relationship with God, why do you ever want to do that?

Just for the record tho, I do think it may be a mortal sin. Try asking the priest during confession and see what he tells you.

I definitely consider freak dancing a mortal sin because it is arouses lust and tempts the opposite sex. Maybe it’s not as effective on seasoned grinders, but that just means that they’ve been used to indulging themselves in that sort of behavior or worse; so it’s now monotonous to them. Their consience has been numbed. I am 22, and i go to clubs once in a while but all I do there is popping, locking etc. What justification does any Catholic have for thinking that grindng is not a sin? It is a direct attempt at sexual arousal with someone you are not married to ie. lust which is categorized as a deadly sin. Pretty simple.

Of course its a sin. You are simulating a sexual act, whether you feel anything for your partner is irrelevant. You are still creating a lustful environment. If you feel you have to justify it, that should be a red flag to you that you are engaging in a sinful activity.

Ballroom dancing and slow dancing are not the same. Please do not try to justify freak dancing by saying its just the way people dance these days. Would you freak dance with your mom or your dad at your wedding? But I bet a lot of you have or will slow dance with one of your parents at your wedding.
