Im just curious as to what the Church’s postion is on the different types of government. Are there any that are favored more than others?
Until the 20th century, the Church officially favored a monarchy. Now the Church recognizes democracy as the most desirable form of government, provided that the democracy recognize a series of basic inalianable rights of every human person in it - essentially meaning a democracy with individual constitutional rights which are respected.Im just curious as to what the Church’s postion is on the different types of government. Do you know why?Until the 20th century, the Church officially favored a monarchy.
The two best places to start would probably be the writings of Pope Pius IX, who explains why we must have a monarchy, and Pope Piux XI, who explains why the form of government is not as important as certain specific aspects of the resulting society.Do you know why?
The Church recognizes that while democracy is the best expression of the direct participation of citizens in political choices, it succeeds only to the extent that it is based on a correct understanding of the human person.[17] Catholic involvement in political life cannot compromise on this principle, for otherwise the witness of the Christian faith in the world, as well as the unity and interior coherence of the faithful, would be non-existent. The democratic structures on which the modern state is based would be quite fragile were its foundation not the centrality of the human person. It is respect for the person that makes democratic participation possible. As the Second Vatican Council teaches, the protection of «the rights of the person is, indeed, a necessary condition for citizens, individually and collectively, to play an active part in public life and administration».[18]
This is with the teachings I have always heard. The Church teaches a government is by men to address the needs of men and all government authority is based in Moral Natural Law. Thus the primary purpose of government is to protect and preserve life through social welfare ( in all forms) which ranges from an army to protect the people – to feeding, and clothing the poor.…Pope Piux XI, who explains why the form of government is not as important as certain specific aspects of the resulting society…
