Having trouble putting a name to this vice.

Say someone says, or writes something to you. It might be mean, or it might be neutral and you read into it bad intentions. You decide to let it go, but you can’t. Over and over in your head you’re replaying the original message (…or conversation…) and your various responses to it. The phrase, “ohhh…I shoulda said this…”, and you dwell a lot. You…in effect…cannot let it go.

…any ideas?

Not sure that I’d call it a vice, but it sounds more like a mild case of an obsessive thought. If it’s dwelling on people being negative to you, that could be a manifestation of low self-esteem, which can be linked to uncharitableness.

Reading bad intentions to something is “rash judgment”.

Dwelling on it is called being “obsessive”. 😉

But whatever it is called, it is a good thing to try not to do. 👍

To put it in different terms, it is a lack of the virtue of charity not to read into it the most positive meaning possible. It is a lack of the virtues of prudence (judgement) and temperance (self-control) to dwell on it.

Sometimes it feels better to try to aquire virtues than to try to get rid of vices. The process ends up being largely the same, but it’s more fun to build than to clean.

In AA, we call this a “resentment”, which the 12 steps are suppose to help us deal with.😦

Unforgiveness. Resentment, as someone already said.

Needs a lot of prayer to overcome.

I would not call it healthy, no matter what it is. It sounds like a mild form of “anger fantasy”, like if I could do it again, I would “tell them”, sort of thing. It is harboring resentment towards another, this is very common, but it can be very detrimental. I have seen this build up and destroy a marriage, a tough thing to deal with.

I prefer just yelling the first time, no regrets.😛 Just kidding, but maybe handling any hurt feelings, when they happen, would be in order.

Next trip to confession, describe this to your priest and I bet he can help you with it.

For me, this is related to idleness. I only dwell on something like this to give me an excuse not to do my chores. If I put it out of mind, and get back to work, then it usually just goes away.

YMMV

Hi

I am not sure what vice it is. But I feel you should pray about these feelings and thoughts when they pester you! If it is neutral and you are reading stuff into it, then ask God why you are doing that. Ask God to reveal to you why you are doing that. Sometimes it is also good to know how you could have improved upon an answer. Maybe you should have been more charitable. Maybe you should have exercised more temperance or prudence. Ask God to help you not to make these mistakes the next time around. Good luck.

Sounds like Anger to me.

Everything is going to fall somewhere in the “egg pals”.
Envy, Greed, Gluttony, Pride, Anger, Lust, Sloth.
