I’m very shy but I see that it limits my love for neighbor. What can I practice to overcome this?

Actually, humility. It is not all about you or how you are perceived or what people think of you. It is about serving others.

Courage helps.

Shyness isn’t necessarily a weakness though. I am also shy and operate better in one on one conversations. All depends on how you use your gifts.

Charity, perhaps. Helping out at the good pantry, or helping the elderly, or the infirm for example.

Magnanimity!! Just kidding, that one is a little hard to come by, according to Aristotle. What about: Liberality – bigheartness, charity and generosity. Can you practice being charitable and generous, even though you’re shy?

Patience, perseverance, and fortitude. I’m shy too: it’s hard but has gotten easier.

First, there is nothing inherently wrong with being shy, and you don’t owe it to anyone to be less shy; it is not an anti-virtue. That said, it is perfectly normal and valid to not want to be so shy. As someone whose self-confidence changed dramatically in recent years, it is certainly possible, though it takes time. “Practice” interacting with more people and pushing myself out of my comfort zone incrementally, combined with therapy (highly recommend), is what ultimately did the trick, so-to-speak. Now I’m an extroverted energizer bunny most of the time and it’s hard to get me to stop 🤣.

My personal take re humility is that it is a little misplaced in this situation. I don’t think your problem is a lack or shortage of humility. Suggesting it is seems a little like blaming you for being shy, which, to me, is both unhelpful and unkind.

What’s the cause of your shyness? There are many solutions, but it depends on the cause.
