What virtue is in practice?

Hi all,
I was wondering…sometimes a question gets posted about our Holy Catholic Faith, which is thoroughly and kindly answered by many. Once answered, it appears that the authors of some OP’s immediately engage in a battle, and had no sincere desire to learn the Truth in the first place. So, my question is two-fold: Why in the world do the faithful Catholics on the board continue to go back and forth with historical documents, ECF’s, explainations, and such with a poster who has shown him/herself to be uninterested in Truth? And if there is virtue in continuing, what is that virtue? Let me close by saying that I KNOW this is not the case with all questions! I am not citing anyone in particular, and just because I THINK someone is being insincere does NOT make it so.

Patience, forebearance, charity, consideration… take your pick.

There will be plenty of times someone will seem to argue for the sake of argument. Sometimes they feel that Catholics are lost and they are doing their Christian duty to expose to us the “obvious errors of our doctrines.” Other times it will be because they are a bit arrogant and think they have all the answers; ready to expose even the church fathers as apostates as they put those bible illiterate Catholics to shame.

But motive often doesn’t matter. If you are patient and stick by your guns, you will plant a seed that may take root later on.

Darn good question.

I often wonder the same thing.

In fact its these rants veiled as an attempt at dialogue that drive me from what could otherwise be an educational thread.

That said I can see how exchanging banter with the Invinvibly Arrogant could be good practice for some of the excellent apologists who frequent the board.

The articulate and well reasoned agruments are still of value to those following the thread even if they are wasted on the “seeker” with the bogus OP.

I think some people like to argue and settle on some threads as a pretext. The question then becomes secondary to winning.
