What was God doing before He made the Universe?

The 2nd law of thermodynamics say that all things tend to entrhopy
**In all energy exchanges, if no energy enters or leaves the system, the potential energy of the state will always be less than that of the initial state. **

Like all good fathers, He was teaching His Son how to play baseball !!
I actually found this pretty funny.

I wish Jesus played for the Cleveland Indians. sigh

After Lebron left our Cavs, this city needs a miracle!

There was no before. Time and space are not separate, but came into existance together. There was no “before the universe” in human understandable terms.

(And its not a new idea, probably some 50-90 years old.)
Only 50-90 years old? St. Augustine answered this question in the Confessions in the fourth century. That was 1614 years ago.

As you said, God created time when He created the universe.

Since God is an eternal Being whose essence is love, I believe that before He created the universe, God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit simply existed in eternity, fellowshipping and pouring out their love for one another.

Think about this from “time” to “time”🙂 Of course its a mystery:rolleyes: I wonder does God “do” anything, we know he created “creation”, but other than that we will not know until we see God face to face and everthing will be made known to us IMHO 🤷

Let’s assume the God is eternal and unchanging.
If He is eternally the Creator/eternally Creative, it would seem to follow that the Universe must also be eternal.
If God is like the Sun, and Creation is like the light from the Sun, then the existence of light from the sun must be co-exist with the sun itself.

If, on the other hand, the Universe is NOT eternal, what was God doing before He created the Universe, and what change occurred that cause the universe to be made? And would the idea of a change in God’s will/power/action (leading to the Creation of the Universe) be inconsistent with the eternal perfection of God?

This is an old problem- but I would like to see if there are any new solutions.
G-d, being omniscient, would also have had to know about His own creation of the universe eternally, so that the act of creation itself is not a temporally finite physical act but rather an eternally psychic act of will. The conception of a Being who is outside of time and place and has created these dimensions in relation to physical nature, as well as our perception of them, is truly mind-boggling.

The universe exists in time but God exists outside time since He created time. For God there is no “before.”

It does not appear from the Big Bang theory that the universe is eternal. 👍

The discovery of the Big Bang was an unsettling event for the atheists. They had always assumed (without proof) that the universe was eternal, and therefore did not need a Creator.

Genesis, 1000 B.C. “Let there be light.”

Carl Sagan in Cosmos, 1980 A.D.

“Ten or twenty billion years ago, something happened – the Big Bang, the event that began our universe…. In that titanic cosmic explosion, the universe began an expansion which has never ceased…. As space stretched, the matter and energy in the universe expanded with it and rapidly cooled. The radiation of the cosmic fireball, which, then as now, filled the universe, moved through the spectrum – from gamma rays to X-rays to ultraviolet light; through the rainbow colors of the visible spectrum; into the infrared and radio regions. The remnants of that fireball, the cosmic background radiation, emanating from all parts of the sky can be detected by radio telescopes today. In the early universe, space was brilliantly illuminated.”

Before the creation of the universe God made angels and cherubim that continually praised him. Satan rebelled and took 2 thirds of the angels with him. There was activity before the tangible things we now see. No universe, no planets , just spirit (God) and spirit beings.
If Satan rebelled and took two thirds of the Angels with him, where did they go, if nothing else had been created?

Why would an eternal God create Angels and cherubim to continually praise him?

It must have been a need in God to do this, otherwise why would He bother? If so, how does a all powerful, eternal, all knowing, all present God, have needs?

God by definition is self sufficient. Perhaps from God’s point of view YOU have needs! 😃

Sorry I dont see how that’s answering my question about why God decided to make Angels and Cherubs who’s whole purpose is to praise Him.

Why does God need or want to be praised all the time?

There is no obvious reason why God needs to be **doing **anything! Any attempt to understand the ultimate nature of the Supreme Reality is doomed to failure…

Angels serve several purposes according to Jewish teaching. One is as messengers from G-d to Man. Another is a means of inspiration for humanity. On Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement), for example, Jews aspire to be like the angels. A third purpose, reserved uniquely for Lucifer, is to test mankind’s free will in choosing to love G-d above all else. While Judaism does not exactly believe in guardian angels, it does say that angels may be created by us every time we do a good deed. It is not G-d who needs angels, but humans who benefit by their presence.

That’s interesting. So they were created ahead of time for man?

Ah, that word “time” again! But in a sense, yes. They are holier than we humans are, but it is we who are G-d’s favorite since we struggle and suffer more and our free will is constantly tested.

God needs nothing. As was said above, God is by definition self-sufficient.

Does God need to be praised all the time? No. But we need to praise Him all the time. 👍

Where did the stuff that exploded in the Bang come from?

That’s one of the things we cannot know because the event defies all the known laws of physics. But it must have been powerful stuff!

Not sure what “ahead” means for you. Humans measure all time by the movement of the Earth on its axis every 24 hours. So the the age of the universe is reckoned somewhere around 14 billion years by that measure.

But the angels were not created in time (days, years, centuries), nor would it seem they have a planet and a sun to measure their age; so whether it is right to say they were created before humans is debatable except as a relative measure of human calculation.

That the angels were in the presence of God “when” the universe was created is suggested in Genesis 1:26.

It’s complicated. 😃

If I may step into purely philosophical theology- it would seem that all ‘being’ is necessarily in relation to something else. We know, for example, that we exist in relation to other things. We are only who we are by virtue of relationships. As a disembodied mind in complete space, with no sensations or no other presences, existence or non-existence would be meaningless.

Now, it would seem that, if this is true, God’s existence is therefore dependent upon the existence of another (perhaps the Word, perhaps the Universe). Now, according to Catholic theology, the Word is eternal begotten (Wisdom also is referred to have been created in eternity in Sirach). So, is it far to say that angels are also eternally created- and that God’s existence, which is possible only relationally, emerges with these things?
