Jesus was definitely literate. In the temple he stood up, unrolled the scroll, and read verses from Isaiah that pertained to Himself. Whether he could write is unknown.

Gotta love that story.

They tested his knowledge of the law.

He didn’t give them an answer for which they were looking. But, it had to rattle their nerves.

It’s about having two witnesses. Jesus implied to them, by writing their names, which one of you Pharisees are going to step forward as the ones with first hand knowledge of the illegal act–the law required this for stoning…

It was an investigation on the part of the Pharisees.

I tend to believe that Jesus knew he was being tested and he was letting the Pharisees know that he knew he was being tested while at the same time revealing his knowledge of the law. The Pharisees got more than they expected. Yet, there hearts were not right so it didn’t have much affect on them to make them believe.

Complete speculation without any foundation. NOBODY and I repeat NOBODY has any idea what Jesus wrote or drew in the sand.

My imagination—He wrote one sentence. The would be stoners would each read their separate sins in that one sentence and think they might be singled out in the middle of the crowd so they dropped their rocks and swiftly left wide eyed with worry.
