What was Jesus writing on the ground when they brought the woman caught in adultery?

OK let us go slowly, slowly:

You noticed what I put bold-red in your quote is when I said that:

And also notice that this argument of yours is to put down my imagination that Jesus was writing the 10 Commandments. And you think I am just going to let you go like that… NO.
Either you probe right your statement or I probe you wrong, which was what I did.

Where  this is not enough for me, quote my post…

The words written in red, I put them in red and bold, but were your own words not mine:thumbsup:

“ad hominem” ad hominem Latin: /æd ˈhɒmɪˌnɛm/ directed against a person rather than against his arguments.

I have never was against you by what you are, but by what you said. You know something, you sound like Glenda.

I am leaving it here, if you do not want to recognize your mistake but try to turn around against me to bite, I am not taking it any more. It is very cunning to say that I said something and do not write the quote, is bias.

Do not play with darkness with me, I like the light.:angel1: :sad_bye:

In what way am I like Glenda? That we both have reasonable comprehension skills? That we both think you should consult a priest (or are they the whore of Babylon too)? That you have banished us both to the kitchen? Yes, I would call Glenda friend, and not just because of her skills in the kitchen.

In some ways I am like dshix too, for obvious reasons.

I don’t know if you realize this but you are asking me not to play with darkness with you. That actually says you are playing with darkness and asking me not to play in that darkness with you:shrug:

Some opinions of church fathers taken from medieval glosses about what he wrote:

*recedentes in terra scribentur. (they that depart from thee, shall be written in the earth.) Jeremiah 17:13

*terra terra terra audi sermonem Domini (O earth, earth, earth, hear the word of the Lord.) Jeremiah 22:29
  • He wrote some letters in which everyone read their own sins (not the ones of the others).
Interesting passages, but is Jeremiah 17:13 referring to the place their physical body will go? Names written in the earth contrasts with names written in heaven of Luke 10:20.

I am not quite sure how the conclusion you draw is derived from the quotes from Jeremiah, can you explain further or supply the Church Fathers references?

I said you are like her because just come to destroy: not able to stand by what you said and then just go changing things to suit your arguments without probe.

As for the darkness, when we say or do things that are not right, we like to hide them, This is darkness, that is why you got upset that I made red and bold something you said in your post. I do not like to hide what I said, I like the light :heaven: :knight1:

As for something that does not belong to this thread that you said ‘(or are they the whore of Babylon too’) why too?? But do not answer here because this does not belong to this thread, if you want send me I private message or open a thread about it and then I come and argue with you.👍

Hi Chalimac, many thanks for this. I see your point, I hope. In Jeremiah 16:10 God tells the prophet what is the sin of the people:

“have forsaken me and have not kept my law”

** and then your quote**

“O Lord, the hope of Israel,
all who forsake thee shall be put to shame;
those who turn away from thee shall be written in the earth,
for they have forsaken the Lord, the fountain of living water”

Also your next quote is about the Law of God, that is to say His Commandments.
May be the Pharisees were expecting to see him writing their own names, but He did not, He wrote the Law that was accusing them of sin so that they could not throw the first stone against the adulterous woman.

I hope I did not interpret wrong what you said.🙂

It is a very different thing all together to say that the Vatican is the Great Prostitute than to say that the Pope is the Antichrist. If God’s people are inside the Great Prostitute and if we say it is the Vatican, then the Pope is part of God’s people.👍

That actually gives me a great deal of insight into you Gloria.

This is a Recapitulation:
"8 1 but jesus went to the mount of olives. 2 early in the morning he came again to the temple; all the people came to him, and he sat down and taught them. 3 the scribes and the pharisees brought a woman who had been caught in adultery, and placing her in the midst 4 they said to him, “teacher, this woman has been caught in the act of adultery. 5 now in the law moses commanded us to stone such. What do you say about her?” 6 this they said to test him, that they might have some charge to bring against him. jesus bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground. 7 and as they continued to ask him, he stood up and said to them, “let him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8** and once more he bent down and wrote with his finger on the ground**. 9 but when they heard it, they went away, one by one, beginning with the eldest, and jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. 10 jesus looked up and said to her, “woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” 11 she said, “no one, lord.” and jesus said, “neither do i condemn you; go, and do not sin again.” "john 8:1-11

here is what i imagine::newidea:

When he bent on the ground he **was starting to write the ten commandments **but they press him to answer and jesus told them that the one that did not have sin to throw the first stone, and then continue to write the ten commandments, that in hebrew will be very short, two words each. but jesus started to write them from the last commandment, the 10th: You shall not covet then 9th not bear false witness, etc. (ex 20:3-17)

since the elders, the scribes and the pharisees who brought the woman, pride themselves in not having other gods beside god and not worshiping idols, not taking the name of god in vain and keeping the shabbat day (the first four commandments), but must probably did not keep so well the others, like not to covet others things, etc. They were the ones to go first. In fact, jesus warned before the people to “…practice and observe whatever they tell you, but not what they do; for they preach, but do not practice.” mt 23:3

as jesus came closer to the first commandments, which the younger will find more difficult to keep, they also left and no one stone the adulterous woman.

what do you imagine??

.
no more problems with the tiles, sand or ground where jesus bent to write!!!

.την γην

this is the greek word and its literal meaning is: ** the earth**

therefore** jesus was writing on the earth**, and not on tiles or sand or dust or what ever you can imagine!!! :d

pd and to clarify that the temple was still in construction in the times of jesus i already explain it in post #45.
dear jonathon, i like your idea  Of being writing with the finger reminding that the law was written by the finger of god (even tough they did not believe that jesus was even a prophet -until today-, but we do believe he is the son of god, therefore see the meaning now of writing with his finger so emphatically). In this thread i did not mention the use of the finger in this way; i just mention the writing of the commandments on the earth.
JonathonofOhio;11596748:
The purpose of Him writing in the dirt with His finger was to show to them that He was the Lawgiver (the Law was written by the finger of God). The Law was written on stone because the hard-hearted men the Law was given to. Jesus wrote in the dirt to signify that he was seeking fruit.
As for writing on the ‘dirt’ (i will say better on the earth which is the greek word use in the text) signifying that he was seeking fruit, that is nice.** it adds certainly something new to all what is being said before.** and i will add that in this way jesus is stating the importance of keeping the commandments even for us today!

so many thanks: 👍

**two new things to add to this thread;

1 the finger of god writing the law again

2 this time on earth because he is seeking fruit from all of us**

i hope i did not change anything of what you wanted to say. 😉

Where and who was the man she was caught in the act with…were there others as well she had been with before…maybe the accusers who wanted her out of the way so they wouldn’t be found out…maybe Jesus was writing their names in the dirt:)

Come on Peebo, who is going to know if this was her only occasion or had others? This passage is not about that, is about not to condemn and not to sin any more. Keep the Commandments of God.

IN POST #19
The man was not dumb, when he heard them coming in where they were, he jumped out of the window and run away, even naked!! But a woman could not do that…😊 😃

In Leviticus says that they should both be stoned to death.
