What Was Mary Like?

You did help. Personally, I believe she was alive when she was Assumed, in order to correlate her Assumption to the Ascension of Christ. To me, they are very similar, the difference being that Christ ascended on His own power and authority, whereas the Blessed Virgin was assumed by the power and authority of God, not on her own.

Those who argue that she died say that she would wish to follow her Son even into death, and that makes sense. Those who argue against her death say that since she was free from sin and obvisously the greatest of the saints, she was assumed before her death. Of course, Jesus too was free from sin and the “primacy is his in everything” and yet he offered himself up to death for us. I tend to think that Mary would want to imitate Jesus by undergoing death. I would say that at the instant of her last breath God assumed her into heaven, body and soul. But, of course, that’s just MHO.

And so the Church doesn’t wish to teach what it does not know/cannot discern from given revelation. We’ll find out one day, I suppose, if God thinks it necessary for us to know, yes?
