I was asking a serious question in no way intended to disparage Pope Francis. If there are offensive comments in this thread, they could realistically be made in any thread on any topic.
I meant to say my comment in regards to the poster cover there, a few posts ago. Your question is VERY valid, of course!

He is still considered new to the position. So, I don’t think we can say so early what his finest moment has been (or will be). But, I have full confidence in him, and I know to ignore about 95% of what the sensationalist secular media reports about him.
Which news sources of the 5% should we trust?

I can only name maybe… 3 or 5 news aggregators/sources when I want to find out what’s going on in the Catholic world.

I’m inclined to believe that previous popes have done Christ-like actions to the poor, the diseased, and to the dying, despite the world’s insistence to the contrary. 😦
I don’t even bother with the secular media reporting about the church, especially about Francis. I can’t decide if they don’t have a clue or if they are twisting things on purpose. I guess it is both.

Great question btw. It is interesting to see what people think is important, or simply impressive about his actions so far. I am also very impressed with things he has done before becoming pope. Sounds like a remarkable man.

I think Pope Francis’ finest moment as Pontiff was on Sept 7 I believe, when he called for a world wide day of prayer and fasting for peace in Syria. Within days Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov helped broker a deal which prevented US airstrikes on Syria. Power of prayer in action.

To be honest, I was afraid that we were going to have another world war. Thankfully, it didn’t happen.

Whereas the media may distort his words that were spoken in homilies, etc., they cannot distort them when he pens his own thoughts in his APOSTOLIC EXHORTATION, Evangelii Gaudium.

I suggest if folks really want to know the mind of the Pope, read it, and take his message to heart.

You are so right

Isn’t it a little early in this pontificate to be talking about “was?”

I thought the same thing. Was implies that his papacy is done, or atleast that it’s down hill from here. It would be better to say ‘what has been his finest moment’.

I think we mean for 2013. I have to say that his finest moment was when he got people around the world, of different faiths and nationalities to pray for Syria.

Hugging people and similar incidents are generally considered to be photo ops which I would bet these were was as well .Religious leaders urging people to pray is not at all unusual so I don’t see how that would count either. Pointedly doing things differently than previous Popes and making sure these things are noticed really just draws attention to his Papacy which I think flies directly in the face of his supposed humble approach to things. Condemning godless capitalism has been a favorite sport of socialists and capitalists for ages so I doubt that would count either.

Maybe establishing the council of Cardinals to advise him on running the Church?

I’d say the release of Evangelii Gaudium or the unprecedented survey of the entire Church for feedback on the family.

I dislike the title of this thread since it seems to be more appropriate for someone who is no longer with us.

As for an answer to this question, Pope Francis has only been Pope less than a year. I hope his finest moments are yet to come.

When he washed the feet of both men and women criminals during Lent - it was (for me), the beginning of Papa Francis’ showing the entire Catholic and non-Catholic world how to live out the Gospels and Corporal Works of Mercy. My heart sings every time the Holy Father acts as a parish priest instead of one of the most powerful leaders in the world.
