What Was the Apostasy?

The obvious answer is that if Jesus gave the keys to his kingdom to Peter, its pretty hard to argue that The Catholic Church is not really the church founded by Jesus. However, if they can create some nuance, where it appears that Peter didn’t really recieve the keys, then they feel they can discredit the claims of the Catholics to being the Church that Christ founded. That gives them at least some basis for legitimacy. Unfortunately for them, scripture is clear and favors the Catholics.
Indeed.

And I would add that no matter how much one may want the facts to be otherwise, facts are facts. It is only by altering the facts, or claiming, somehow, that the facts are not really the facts, that one can logically proceed to a different conclusion. This is why the Mormon claims of some “great apostasy” are so important to them, because their claim of legitimacy is directly linked to their belief, no matter how untenable, in a previous “apostasy”.

If no god was formed before or after “I AM” wouldn’t they have to have the same ontological substance?

Is. 43:10; “You are my witnesses,” says the LORD, "and my servant whom I have chosen, that you may know and believe me and understand that I am He. Before me no god was formed, nor shall there be any after me.

What other option is there?
There is no such thing as ontological substance. Or maybe it is actually chicken soup. Chicken soup is the great equalizer for humanity.

Has science recently discovered the same onotological substance underlying all things? Hmmmm must have missed those headlines.

What I am looking for is the concept of the same ontological substance.

I assume she meant of the same substance or ontologically the same. Maybe she will clear it up for us.

Matthew 16:19 clearly says the keys were giving to Peter. When non-Catholics try to twist Mathew 16:18, in the light of history, I just have to say, “so what, your church wasn’t there.”

Yes, James Talmage tried to make the “Great Apostasy” seem like an empirical truth. But now it seems when Mormons are pushed against the wall, they punt to claiming it is a theological truth. Theology made up by Stone, Campbell, and Smith

Do you suppose that’s why it is so difficult to pink down just WHAT WHERE and WHEN the so-called “Great Apostasy” occurred? If it is just accepted as “truth” and there’s no curiosity about the details. then it’s no wonder that when Mormons are asked for the details we get an assortment of answers but no clear unified response, much less any evidence.

I think (and I think you do, too) the reason they can not answer those questions is because it never happened. That is why they are left with a theological truth.

Well I agree that it never happened, but obviously millions of people believe it did, although how deeply they have studied and pondered the issue no doubt varies widely ~ just as in other faiths, including ours, I’m sure there are some Mormons who have studied the faith very deeply and others who are less inclined in that direction.

What I can’t figure out is why anyone believes it, and when no Mormon can ever tell you why, or when you get an assortment of answers ~ which seems to indicate that “The Great Apostasy” is pretty much whatever one decides it is ~ it raises the question as to why ANYONE would believe it. Perhaps it’s just not that important to Mormons, it’s hard to know. People often gravitate to Mormonism for family reasons, not theological ones.

Were I inquiring into the faith, it would be something I would want to know, but then I won’t be inquiring so it’s pretty much a moot point. I find it interesting that no one who does hold this view can give an answer to the question beyond their own “belief”.

Snow, we can show you the versus, but we can’t actually make you read or understand them…
If I were to post a verse that I claimed said something or proved some point, I’d be able to explain how and why that verse said what I claim it does.

You, or posters here, post verses that ya’ll claim demonstrate consubstantiality yet the verses in question say nothing about consubstantiality and ya’ll cannot explain the hows or the whys of it.

The challenge is so very, very simple. Post a verse or verses that demonstrate that the three persons of the Trinity are comprises of one single ontological substance and then explain HOW and WHY that verse or verses says what you claim it does.

Simple - not rocket science.

By the way, if Biblical scholars can’t do it, what makes average internet posters think they can do it?

The answer is simple:)

Because it is the teaching of the church.

I never understand why this matters to Protestants and non-Christians.
It’s an intellectual exercise. When someone makes a claim, we subject it to tests of fact and reason.
Maybe not much. Peter could have been left in charge, or not, and there still could have been an apostasy, or not. For that matter, I accept that Peter likely was in charge - Mormons might view Peter, James and John as an ancient version or what today we call The First Presidency - The President of the Church and his two Counselors.
What I find debate-worthy is the claim that Peter was the first Pope. There is no evidence that he was anything like a Pope. Certainly it is valid to say that based on faith you think he was, but it is factually incorrect to say there is historical evidence to support it.
The bigger issue is when people claim that not only was Peter left in charge but that Christ’s entire church was founded upon Peter and then go on to misinterpret the phrase about hell as having something to do with Satan, which clearly it does not.

I would have to agree. Just denial on her part.
So you can’t explain HOW or WHY the verse say what you claim they say and then you claim that I am in denial.

That’s simply a pedestrian insult because you can’t argue the merits of your claim.

I dunno - it’s your claim. Please demonstrate how that verse proves singular ontological substance. While you are at it, could you explain of what substance God is formed?

The answer is simple:)

Because it is the teaching of the church.
And that’s a perfectly acceptable answer… somebody told you so and you have faith that it is true.

It is a whole other matter if you want to argue evidence and proof.

Well…it would be one thing if I blindly accepted it because somebody told me so.

But scripture, history, logic, prayer and, yes ultimately faith, are what we must search for truth.

And it is in all these things that I find the truth to be, simply…that the Catholic Church is the church founded by Christ, with authentic, documented and authoritative apostolic succession.

  1. Can you explain how scripture and logic demonstrate consubstantiality?
  2. Can you provide the authentic “historical” documentation that Linus Cletus and Clement I were Popes?

I get the feeling that Mormons believe it is an empirical truth. They must not give it much thought because after discussing it with them, they back away for empirical, and claim it as a theological truth. I have only known one person to convert to Mormonism and he didn’t do it for theological reasons. I think it was love bombing and business contacts. In a letter, I asked him what theologically or philosophically drew him to Mormonism. No response.

No you are not getting it - Snow is right- the Greeks speak of ontological substance. It is the stuff that stuff is made out of-- the notion is that it is like modeling clay. Everything is made of modeling clay, but in different shapes and “appearances”. So according to this theory, The Father son and holy ghost are all made of the same “clay” or substance or being or whatever vague imaginary word you want to use. So then you can imagine that three things are really one thing because they are all made of the same stuff. Obviously this stuff does not exist.

So stone’s point is that “substance” is part of the theology of the church, but it is not a scriptural concept whatsoever. There is no theory of the trinity in the catholic church without some sort of imaginary “substance” or “being” or some other imaginary idea which underlies reality.

So snow is asking for evidence of this in the scriptures to show you that it doesnt exist in the scriptures.

Got it now? And I don’t think Snow is a “she”.

Well of course I could then just answer “yes it was” and then where would we be?

What you are forgetting is that among all your “millions” are all the protestants in the world too. Mormons are not the only ones who believe in the apostasy. In fact, if we are voting, the vast majority of the world does not believe that Catholicism is true.

That doesn’t make them right – but don’t think that you are in the majority because you aren’t.

Come to our ward sometime and ask all the catholic converts to stand and you will see almost 40% are catholic converts including moi.
