What was the best song you heard at mass this weekend

None, unfortunately. It was all 1970s “folk music”, as usual.

Oh, this is so tough! Let’s see, the opening hymn was “Gather us in” and then we heard, “Though the Mountains may fall,” and then for closing the Mass it was “Lord of the Dance.”

Hmmm… I guess I’d have to say none… None of those songs even belong in a Catholic Mass.

Can you tell me why these songs don’t belong at mass?

We also played ‘Christ be our Light’ and ‘City of God’
I also considered ‘For all the Saints’, but went with other songs familiar to the choir and crowd. You know how summer affects attendance at mass :rolleyes:

Since this is an opinion thread, my opinion is that songs like Gather us in and Lord of the Dance (with all its hand clapping) are taking up liturgical space that should be replaced by holy, sacred songs like Faith of our Fathers and Holy God we Praise Thy Name.

Yes it’s an opinion thread… I’m glad you joined in.
I was just asking to see if there were any theological problems with the songs that I wasn’t aware of, for my own personal use for future music planning.

I’m not crazy about ‘Lord of the Dance’ for mass either (just my opinion) I’ve never heard it done with any clapping.

I have asked our choir (and our priest) if they could sing just ONE traditional sacred song on Sundays, but they just keep singing the modern songs that have been published in the last forty years.

When we had our parish feast celebration, the Feast of the Sacred Heart, I thought they would sing the appropriate feast songs like O Sacred Heart of Jesus but they sang a song that has been made popular on the radio - Put your hand in the hand of the man from Galilee, (of course with hand clapping), along with a few others that had no relevance whatsoever to the Sacred Heart. It was very disappointing.

I like ‘Gather us in’ 😊 , But that was still funny.
I can’t imagine hearing or playing “Put your hand in the hand” at mass… well, maybe as recessional when the mass is technically over??

At my previous parish, I heard this played once at the end of mass,
"come on people now, smile on your brother,
everybody get together try and love one another. right now"

Were you by any chance at my parish? :rolleyes: They sing the most ludicrous songs at times. We also have a full band. Two guitars, a piano, conga or bongo drums, a flute, a clarinet, and a base guitar. Just like a concert. What was that the pope said again about musical instruments at Mass???🤷
 
I LOVE “Lord of the Dance!” I wish we’d sing it at our church.

My daughter is the production stage manager for a professional ballet company, so I identify with the song.

I think the allegory is so real-life for me

And Copland music (actually, I believe it’s Shaker melody that he borrowed) is always worth hearing!
 
There are times I’ve been tempted to issue a general invitation to the different parishes I play for:
A MUSIC PARTY!

Come to my house for a “Music Party,” at which you can request ANY hymn in the hymnal or bring music for ANY hymn or Christian song that you would like to sing with a group of Christians. I will play it on the piano (I’m a great sight reader), and everyone will join in and sing with all their heart.

Refreshments and more fellowship to follow.

Obviously it’s not Mass, but it would be a chance to sing, with other Christians, not just alone in your shower, all your favorite hymns, choruses, classical arias, chants, operatic ballads, country songs, folk songs, contemporary Christian rock (yes, I can play rock, but I don’t really roll very well!), etc. at least once in your lifetime!

A music party at a house sounds fine, but I go to one every Sunday at my Church, it seems.

We always have wonderful music in my parish. Last Saturday vigil, it included:

“Praise, my soul, the King of Heaven,”
“Alleluia, Sing to Jesus,”
“Jesus, My Lord, My God, My All.”

All of them some of my favorites! 😃
 
Cat, I want to come to your party.

This weekend we attended our old Parish where the “music war” between Father & the cantor continue. He sings one beat ahead of her to mark his terroritory. Whatever.

Anyway:
Entrance: Be Not Afraid (?? why this one for entrance)
Communion: Taste & See
Exit: City of God

Blah, not a mention of John the Baptist unless Father was changing the words in the Gospel to “John the Baptizer”, as if we might think that John the Baptist was an actual BAPTIST.:rolleyes:
