Are Priest said that the man meant he would follow Jesus after his father died-not that he was dead now.

no…exactly…but the point was that Jesus said…‘let the dead bury the dead…’ that the father in question wasn’t a believer…so let another non believer bury him. Dead in a spritual sense here. No, the father is not dead yet…but in other words…we should turn our backs on whatever/whoever God asks us to, if they are not willing to believe. Hard words at times, Jesus spoke.

I actually always thought it meant what u are saying…that when God calls, he wants you to respond. But, if you think about the love of God–why would He not want us to take care of our family? No, He’s more saying that don’t let non believers keep you from following Me…or anything/anyone from following Me. In this case, He speaks of the man’s father…

Yes…we should get them to register here!!!

Ours was on discipleship and the difference between being a believer and being a disciple.

Even satan believes but we show that we are disciples by following Jesus and obeying his commands. Everyone is called to discipleship in different ways. True discipleship demands generosity and sacrifice. The believers wanted to delay following Jesus. They found excuse after excuse why they couldn’t do it right away. They weren’t willing to sacrifice. The disciples realized that nothing was more important than dropping everything and following Him.

He was on his way to Jerusalem and His Passion and He was calling us to follow Him, all the way to the Cross.

The line from our homily that stuck with me the most was the priest saying that we shouldn’t go back to our family to say “see, this is what I want to become”, but that we can go back after our conversion (after following Jesus) to say “see, this is what I am”.

This priest always ties the readings together into his homilies. He has an accent and is difficult to follow sometimes, but it is always worth the effort!

I was very pleasantly surprised by our homily. Our pastor has been with us for 2 weeks now and he was so nervous last week that he read off his notes to tell us about himself. This week however, was one of the best homilies I have heard. He started out with who Elijah and Elisha were, what is a prophet, and what they did. Then he went on to how Elijah was taken up… not died and tied that into John the Baptist. So far so good… then he talked about what Jesus said about followers. What they could expect if they follow him, (Foxes have dens, birds of the sky have nests but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head). He continued on with an explanation of the 3 different responses Jesus had for those who wished to follow him. After that he talked about our crosses to bear as Catholics and Christians as well as our responsibility to set a good example. Showing our faith by remembering to thank God for meals out in public not just at home, him wearing his roman collar and the good and the bad he gets from that. He ended with a story about going to a store and the cashier asking him if he was a Catholic priest. When he said yes, the man asked him if he had been saved. He answered that he is being saved as St. Paul described in his epistles. I think I am definitely gonna like this new priest!!!

Ours was delivered by a visiting monsignor and was very good. Focusing on the gospel reading only, however, I would have liked to hear some delving into Paul’s letter. But what he said really stayed with me and is being reiterated by most of the other homilies described. He asked the question are you an “admirer” of Christ or a disciple? And what decisions are you going to do this week to reflect your choice? What can you do to be a disciple?
He said that the people who stopped short of fully taking up their cross and following Jesus believed in him, believed he was the Messiah but ADMIRED him - did not want to take that final step to commitment. I thought it was very fitting for our times and my personal life.

The Priest was talking about an annual donation to the Pope.I listened for a while but it was complicated and political so I prayed instead.But then he started talking about how to follow Jesus.In the Reading, we had the story where 3 men wanted to follow Jesus but He discouraged them by saying about foxes and birds and 'Let the dead bury their own dead.'The priest said it meant we should follow Jesus no matter what obstacles we encountered.He said ‘Do not allow any obstacle to prevent you from following the Lord.’ And so it was a very powerful sermon, and I hope I remember those words forever.
