What was the Mass like before Vatican II?

In light of the fact that it took many, many years for the Mass of Pius V to actually conform to the norms [for one reason or another] it is not so startling that the Mass of Paul VI is not celebrated in some places as it was meant to be.
The communication had something to do with that back then. But today’s technology, it’s no longer an excuse. And how many years are we to endure watching the irreverence displayed in most NO messes???

The Mass of Paul VI was largely inspired by sects not in the Catholic Church. Thus the fall of FAITH, is not surprising.

In addition to your offerings, Jeanne…

The priest said Mass with his back to the congregation, and many of the responses, though not all, weren’t made by the people but by the altar server, who was always male, Mass and the responses being in Latin. However, people had missals which had Latin on one page, and the vernacular, eg English on the facing page, so they were able to follow the Mass. Yes there was the reverence and the mystery…

People knelt for Communion along a Communion rail and waited for the priest to move across along the other side of the rail. You received on the tongue, from the priest only, with a patern or plate held under you chin, usually by an altar server. The congregation was not offered the chalice.

What have I missed?
The Ordinary Form is not required to face the congregation, have female altar servers, or say Mass in the vernacular, and that was started by liberal Catholics.

Has it ever occurred anyone to that so many people talk about the ‘changes’ after Vatican II, because they weren’t present before VII? That obviously means that the abuses were a dramatic change from what had been there previously. Sure, there are bad priests always. Never in modern times was there such corruption of the liturgy, however.

Amen.👍

Well, we none of us were around in the 16th, 17th or 18th centuries. We certainly can’t blithely assume that liturgical abuse and innovation didn’t ALSO plague the TLM from its beginning - if they were present in the TLM in the 20thc as I think we’ve established they were. That simply doesn’t stand to reason.
Well, a lot of us were around in the 70’s 80’s 90’s and up until today and we **know for a fact **that liturgical abuse and innovation has plagued and continues to plague the Pauline Rite.

As far as the abuses, how did you put it, as we have already established were present in the Traditional Mass in the 20th century, what exactly were they?

I’ll tell you what they were. the same old tired song and dance that those opposed to the mass have said since the time of the Reformation. Exactly the same.

Speed masses : 7 minute 5 minute no wait my dad knew a guy who heard about 3 minute Sunday Masses somewhere back in the day:thumbsup:

Nobody understanding whats going on: red herring , but they never fail to bring it up in spite of testimony to the contrary:banghead:

Priests mumbling away in a dead language::rotfl: This one always cracks me up

Priests mangling or misstating the words, for example

“Bread thou art and bread thou will remain”

Funny, Luther said exactly the same thing and we all know what he wanted and what his true motivation was. How many kids did he have after he married the former Nun, was it six or seven? I forget And as far as misstating the words, if no one could hear them or even understand them, how in the world did they know?

And the biggie I guess

PEOPLE PRAYING THE ROSARY:bigyikes: :bigyikes: :bigyikes: :bigyikes: Doesn’t get much worse than that does it?

Have I left anything out??

I’m going to go out on a limb and disagree here… in the EF masses that I attend, whenever the priest says something directly to the congregation (ie, Dominus vobiscum), he will turn around and face us when he says it.

In the OF, the priest is saying things directly to the congregation almost the whole time (certainly far more than in the EF), which is probably why he spends so much time facing the congregation.

Just the tired old song and dance coming from your side of abuses of the NO - let’s see if I remember 'em all:

Clown Masses (never seen one that was verified as being a Catholic Mass);

Liturgical Dance (not for twenty five years! Whatever craziness you Americans might get up to, I can assure you that particular infection hasn’t spread here or to any other country I’ve visited, and I’ve been to plenty);

Abuses of the Eucharist (never seen a drop or spill - nor even any attempt to take a Host without consuming - that wasn’t dealt with promptly and properly. And I do pay attention. Otherwise never come across a particle of Host or drop of Precious Blood anywhere it shouldn’t be.)

Alleged abuses of EMsHC? I’d love to see a church document that supplies an actual number of EMHCs that a church should have, so that we can know when this ‘abuse’ actually occurs.

Music? - Again, I’d love a document that says other than Gregorian chant or classical music is not permissible

I think that’s about hit the highlights

Appleby;4733266]I concur. I had Latin in grades 7 and 8, both for liturgical reasons and because it was considered a good base to learning both English and the Romance languages. For today’s generation that thinks LOL is a word, Latin is probably far too difficult.
Almost 50 yrs. after I graduated from high school, I can still hear our Latin teacher…Mother Mayer…saying, “Think of Latin as a gym class for the brain”, children. That it was, but it’s also proven quite handy. One who knows Latin can decipher many of the more polysylabic English words. While English is a Germanic language, the words given to us by the German language are usually the most basic. Of the 100 most common words in the English language (words like the, a, I, tree, farm, etc.), only a handful come form Latin, while words that are longer and often more obscure are dominated by Latin.
I recently changed parishes to an Oratory in which TLM and a sung English Mass are offered and in both cases silence is not only EMPHASIZED but CONSIDERED NORMAL both before and after Mass (not to mention DURING.) In my last parish, people came into the church blabbering in “outdoor voices” and continued to do so even after the bells had rung to usher all the latecomers inside. In the new parish there is no need for people to be told to turn off their Binkies. In the old one it was sometimes necessary for Father to stop the homily or the announcements to ask someone to shut the thing off. In that parish during times when silence would be expected, one frequently heard some primary school child endlessly repeating urgently, “Mom. Mom. Mom. Mom. Mom. Mom…” In this parish it is far more normal to see even quite young children genuflect and cross themselves before entering the pew, and then sit SILENTLY.
My Father was a gentleman in the true sense of the word. He was both gentle & manly. Had any of us children ever said "Mom, Mom, Mom at Mass, or even spoken aloud, I think we’d have been “dead meat”.

My own children never gave me a problem at Mass, either. They were brought up in the Novus Ordo Church, but from the very beginning they were taught about the sacredness of the Mass…never mind what the other kids around them were doing, they knew they wouldn’t get away with irreverence at Mass.

My own pet peave is these kids that seem to need to run to the rest rooms once & even twice during Mass…climbing over everyones feet, dislodging coats & purses, etc. while their parents give us that “Isn’t she darling” look. I mean didn’t their Mothers tell them to “go” before leaving for Church. Mass only lasts an hour, for goodness sakes.
It is such a wonderful thing to have half an hour of silence before and after Mass to “be still and know that I am God” … not to mention for “Speak, for thy servant heareth.” There are so very few places in today’s world where silence is even possible. I think not only adults, but children, need to learn to listen in silence and I am so thankful to have found a parish where this is done.
Ah SILENCE. It’s so dreaded & feared by today’s society. There is always a radio playing, a TV. blaring away in the background. Which is why I walk daily in the woods with my Labrador Retriever. No traffic noise, no cell phone bleating, just Ben & I &, though I talk to him about everything, he can be happy without conversation. Many people can’t be.

Great. Then since you have established that no abuses exist in the Pauline, pray tell me which ones you have determined to exist in the Traditional.?

Might I recommend the following site to you? Its a good one. You;ll love it:thumbsup:

And this link also is pretty good. It has several articles linked to it. Enjoy:thumbsup:

One rogue parish makes a bad NO, of course. And necessarily a bad country as well. 👍 By the way, there’s no mention of liturgical dance anywhere, so you still can’t say there’s any going on here in Oz! Epic fail 😛

And this is opposed to … oh, whole countries (England, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, half of Germany …) that left the Church almost en masse before the NO was a glint in Paul VI’s eye 🤷

… but of course the Mass back then was perfect in every way, even though all those perfectly-catechised and oh-so-fervent Catholics, with all the self-evident spiritual and other benefits of your perfect abuse-free Latin Mass, left the Church in droves, in numbers that are comparable to what has happened since Vatican 2

There will always be test of Faith throughout the history of the Church. The difference back then was that anyone that clearly left are manifest to have cling on to heresy or out of human respect. Today, many may yet still be in the Church but they continually spread their error and still treated as someone in good Catholic standing.

Before, they left because they cannot stand the Truth as preached by the Catholic Church. Today people left because they are spiritually hungry or treat other religion as equal to that of the Catholic Church – “No salvation outside the Catholic Church”, is no longer in the same context as before. Others whom I know left because they see Priests and Nuns today are so engrossed with politics than spiritual affairs.

So, in previous centuries, of the Church most of those who stayed have a stronger spirit because the Church, in all Her actions stress on the Right Faith and Holiness.

Today, many catholic have different opinions of a matter even if the Church has already taught what is Truth on the issue. Many so-called catholics today who go to mass yet feel that abortion or contraception are ok, or divorce should be allowed by the Bishops – and yes they recieve communion. 😃 Do we have such confusion before VaticanII?

Even in this forum some posters are strong defenders of Papacy yet some of their post are a mixture of Catholic and Protestant approach.
😃

Absolutely we had ‘such confusion’. Do you think those hordes of Protestants who so quickly turned their back on the teaching of transubstantiation (many of them going further and denying the Real Presence altogether) all to a man perfectly understood and accepted it while Catholic? Or the Church’s teachings about Papal authority as England did under Henry VIII?

Clearly, even while calling themselves Catholic (in fact I don’t think Henry EVER called himself anything other than Catholic, albeit one who was out of communion with Rome), these people had faulty understanding of crucial aspects of Church teaching. It was precisely ‘such confusion’ that enabled the Reformation to happen, or happen so quickly and spread so wide, in the first place 🤷

I agree, there were clearly some bad things going on for the church to take the course it did. WHen I talk to the seniors in my chruch, the 75-100 year old people, I have yet to find one that liked the mass then before Vatican II compared to now. Try talking to the people in that age group and see what they say.

If it was just one rogue parish, I would agree. Unfortunately, it is not. Far from it. It is just one that happened to make the news due to the invalidity of hundreds of baptisms done there over the years. As far as liturgical dance, I’ve seen them at the concluding masses. at just about every religious conference that I’ve ever been to. But, I have never brought the matter up as do many. I find other things more troubling, much more troubling as a matter of fact.

I note that you didn’t point out anything new about abuses in the Traditional Mass… I am hardly surprised.

I have never claimed the Traditional Mass was perfect. Just that the way the Ordinary Form is celebrated in many places is infinitely worse. Not the Rite itself, but the liberties that so many take with it.

Would you like a few more articles on other rogue parishes as you call them? Just for giggles. Or perhaps a few videos? Oh thats right though, the videos can’t be authenticated. At least you won’t accept them as being genuine. Oh well, they came from somewhere.👍

Yet those people were clearly outside the Church. They’ve manifested their error clearly.

Today, error is spread from within. And, yet those bad priests and bishops still remain in good Catholic standing.

From where do those bad priest get their strength to introduce error?

From what church document gives them the ability to desecrate the sanctuary of the Lord and allowing other false religion to celebrate their worship therein?

Neither have you pointed out anything new about abuses in the NO. Which in its turn doesn’t surprise me either, thanks be to God.

St Mary’s in Brisbane is hardly news to anyone who pays attention to such things.

Really? And what of all your reminiscing about how wonderful Latin was for a poor immigrant waif such as yourself? Would you class use of the vernacular as an abuse or a liberty then? Never mind that it’s permitted by the rubrics and documents promulgating the NO 🤷

No thanks. I’m sure they all came from somewhere, yes - problem is most of them you don’t know when they were taken. Some maybe not even where!

At least consider the possibility that a number of them are from occasions outside of the Mass, for example. In which case they probably wouldn’t be an abuse.

Uh huh. Tell that to parishioners in this St Mary’s parish palmas and I have just been discussing - they are in anything but good Catholic standing! On the contrary they’ve been publicly reprimanded and ordered to change their ways. Assuming they fail to do so, it’s a matter of a short time before their priests are excommunicated, if they haven’t been already. There’s no tolerance there of their desecration of the sanctuary of the Lord.

I believe every ‘Catholic’ ‘bishop’ who has taken part in ordaining women has been excommunicated, if they weren’t already excommunicate before they took part (I think some were). So was Archbishop Milingo (the African bishop who decided to marry contrary to his obligation of priestly celibacy).

Before Praying with Heretics was considered a sin. More so, if one allowed the sanctuary to be desecrated noh?

I heard reports that that somewhere in Fatima a Church was desecrated and a bishop was there to witness it. Also, somewhere in Rome, a church bearing the name of an Apostle was also desecrated. What’s the answer to that in Vatican II?

In our country a bishop allowed gays to march with women’s clothes in the street to celebrate the feast of St. Helen. What’s the answer of Vatican II to that?

Aren’t Catholics suppose to be more fervent as each council is a sign of growth for the Catholic Faith? hmmm…

So, I guess it takes a while until the women priests get’s their way in the Church… altar girls is already here… 😉

(Don’t tell us Vatican II lost the answers to the above issues? )

What about it? I spoke the truth. It was a unifying force. But then again, how would you know if it was or wasn’t? If your profile is correct, you weren’t even around in those days.

And why don’t you consider the possibility that a number of them came from exactly where they are claimed to be from. From the masses filmed at these places.

I think in the end result everyone knows from your posts exactly where you stand as they probably do where I do. However, I don’t hate the Pauline Rite No. I just point out the facts, having lived through the changes.

Do you also speak from a personal knowledge pf pre Vatican II experience or merely from prejudice?
