What was up with that Mass?

OK, so we’re visiting family in Minnesota & we go to mass… beautiful old church with lots of stained glass & wooden pews but as soon as the Priest comes in I think, huh? First off - he didn’t come in following the cross - he just sort of appeared in the front & he started talking, no sign of the cross - no peace be with you - nothing. So he’s talking and he asks us to bow our heads in “reflection” which I’m thinking must be in leu of the confess our sins part - so then we have the readings, which granted, the gospel was long & the priest & a woman took turns reading it. So then there’s the homily - not kidding - about 3 sentences. We didn’t recite the creed… then just a few prayers… the gifts are brought up - he does the next part & then it’s time for the Our Father & all the kids in the church charge up to the alter and they make a big hand holding cirlce with Father while we say the prayer. My kids are like, “what’s up with that… it looks like ring around the rosey” It was sooooo odd. Then he said “Offer each other a sign of peace” but he never said peace be with you to us…

The whole thing was so odd. So many parts were missing. I’m told my parish is very traditional - by the book. Is this what it’s like when a parish isn’t???
 
It sounds like that parish is off doing it’s own little thing. While it is true that many parishes are less than traditional the one you described just seems wacky. :whacky: You should contact the dioceace’s bishop and see if he’ll deal with it. Other than that just pray for the priest, the parishioners, and the church.
 
I went to a different parish last Sunday and they had a Youth Mass. Three things stood out:
  1. They sang a weird version of The Creed;
  2. Three teenagers acted as EMHC and received the Eucharist at the same time as the priest took his communion and
  3. Father sat during the distribution of Holy Communion.
Father is new to the parish and has spent the last 6 years studying in Rome. The youth leaders are excited about having him there and probably don’t even realise there was anything wrong.

Having said that, it was nothing like carol marie’s experience thank goodness.

Actually, I wouldn’t call what you described to be all that far off the wall. OK, maybe the kids storming the altar thing was a bit wild. But other than that, I’d say that the way you put things wasn’t all that bad and relatively tame. Of course, maybe that is just because over time I’ve probably seen about every conceivable irregularity there is and grown thick skin. Though I suppose I wouldn’t be surprized to see some more. I mean, liturgical creativity never ceases.

I wish it weren’t so, but I believe that those who do these things to the Mass are actually trying to get us all to grow “a thick skin” and not oppose them any more. They have hijacked the Mass claiming they are allowed to do so in the name of making it culturally acceptable - ignoring that they have no such right and ignoring that the horse hooey they are foisting upon us has nothing to do with western culture. The intellectual dishonesty of claiming these innovations are not prohibited is beyond belief. Even more than the intellectual dishonesty is the hubris attendant to the claim thay they know better and can do so in the face of Rome’s statements to the contrary. I can only think that it’s not so much that they don’t want the Pope as much as they want to be the Pope. It’s outrageous. Check out some of the other threads. Pray you don’t trip over Clown Mass pictures.

at our parish,. Father calls the kids around the altar for the consecration ( gulp ) and the Our father. He involves them., they have to bow etc. when he holds up the Body and Blood. He tells us " peace be with you", too, so I guess it’s ok., this only happens at the so-called “family and children’s mass”. They’ll only have one reading ( new Testament ) plus Gospel., Then the homily is usually very short,. sometimes done by our religious education coordinator ( which I think is really off…shouldn’t the homily always be done by a priest? ). This is mainly done with our pastor,. our junior priest is more conservative ( which i prefer ), he still does a proper homily. The creed, yeah, we sing that a lot, too., I asked our junior priest about that,. he said that was ok by Church teachings., He didn’t look too comfortable, though., Ever since I’ve asked him we’ve been saying the creed ( funny coincidence I guess ) though…Our other 2 weekend masses are properly done,. though, so I don’t really get all that upset about the kids’ mass anymore. A lot of people show up and the kids like coming,. so I guess in this day and age it’s good to have some more fun mass ( ok, don’t slaughter me for that comment now ). If you really didn’t like it, don’t go back I guess or address the priest and ask him if this is an every Sunday occurence that mass is cut so short. I would go somewhere else for sure. God bless!

The entire liturgy from begining to end save the homily can be sung. However, it must be the mass parts and not some adaptation.

It is not about mass being fun. Going to the circus is fun, why, because it is entertainment. Mass is not about us and it is not supposed to be entertainment but rather the Mass is liturgy it is the work of the people in an act of worship which is required to give to God for His sake, not ours.

It would have been the Apostle’s Creed, I suspect. This is okay to do for children. You are used to the one usually called the Nicean Creed.
 
Thanks for your replies. How sad that what I experienced wasn’t THAT far out… circus mass? Barney at mass? I am just so thankful for my regular parish which is so predictable - week after week - word for word (except for the readings & prayers etc.) anyhow - I just love it that way…

If I wanted something new or different according to the whims of one man (in this case, the Priest) - I would have remained Protestant.

It always makes me Thank God for my parish when I here these stories.

On Sunday I could just not get myself to open the song book to “Ride On Jesus Ride” at the end of Mass. I had ask my wife if that was really the name. It sounded like a Harley ad. but I believe it might be an old spiritual song

You should have opened the book. It was probably Reign Jesus, Reign, but then you could be correct. There is lots of crazy stuff out there.
