Why were the works of both men placed on the Index of Forbidden books? My AP Euro teacher says it’s because the Church is “hostile to science” which I know is untrrue, and that Galileo was tried because his theories “undermined the teaching that everything revolves around the Pope” which is equally nonsensical. I know by now that public school history gives a glaringly inaccurate picture of the Church’s role in modern Western Civilization, but it begs the question, why?
