What was your greatest adventure

My greatest adventure was moving from home at nineteen to the big city of Houston, Texas…did no have a job…rented an apartment a month earlier. That was the beginning of my life as a young person!

Other than marriage and parenting…probably completing a full 26.2 mile marathon.

Very few people thought I could do it and they had good reason to doubt! I have never been graced with speed. Even as an energetic kid I’ve always been THE Slowest Runner. And once I started doing 5Ks, I realized I run slower than some people walk. My stride is just really really short. So the biggest challenge was being juuuust fast enough to avoid being removed from the course…and prepare my body for 8 hours of continuous pavement pounding.

My time was abysmal as expected but I got my medal and a commemorative tattoo.

My greatest adventure was appearing on Jeopardy!

I flew out (after a couple of decades of being terrified of planes) with my best friend, and we had the time of our lives.

Mr. Trebek was the most incredible gentleman you could imagine. A fellow contestant never made it to Final Jeopardy, being ‘in the red’, and at the end of the program when he came out to chat with us, he came to her and said immediately, “Now don’t you feel bad about this. I know you knew the answers but these two—pointing to me and the other contestant—were just too quick on the buzzers this time”.

I’ll never forget that. He went out of his way to comfort somebody and did it with such sincerity and kindness.

It’s probably obvious that I came in second (and wishing that one could keep the money at the end of final instead of ‘just’ $2000, LOL) but hey I lost to a tournament of champions semifinalist, and I was 61, the ‘old lady’ of our group.

You’re never too old for adventure!
