It was about the time Jesus spent in the desert. 40 days. And the temptations he resisted.
 
Our pastor’s homily focused on the reality of the devil, despite the fact that many people now say there is no such thing , and how, when we call upon the Lord and cooperate with grace, he can be defeated.
 
Conversion and the patience and mercy of God in waiting for us to “Repent and believe the Gospel”.
 
There is this baby camel. He asked his mother, " Why do we have three flat toes?"

Mother camel: So that we could walk without our feet sinking into the desert sand.

Baby camel asked again: Why do we have long eyelashes?

Mother camel: So that they will protect our eyes from the sand and dust blown by the wind in the desert.

Baby camel asked again: Why do we have humps?

Mother camel (now quite irritated): So that we can store our food and water, during the times when there is long draught without food in the desert.

Baby camel: OK mom. We have flat toes so that we could walk in the desert without our feet sinking into the sand. We have long eyelashes to protect our eyes against the sand and dust blown by the wind in the desert. We have humps so that we can store our food and water during the long draught without food in the desert.

Ok, I understand that in the desert but we are in a zoo, mom.

… Sometimes today we are in our comfort zone, and unlike Jesus, we did not go out to the desert to pray and fast.

Maybe for this Lent, we should go out there in the ‘desert’ and experience the absence and to pray more.

Yes it was about the 40 days in the desert led by the holy spirit
 
The priest started with “sometimes I wish God would flood the earth again.” He talked about how we don’t treat people as people but instead as part of an agenda. Specifically, he talked about the school shooting last week, and how quickly it was forgotten that 17 human beings were killed and that their deaths are being used for politics. He also talked about how many people put on Facebook that they were in “our thoughts and prayers” and how many of those people are liars and didn’t pray. He also said that, while prayers are important, they don’t put bread on the tables of the poor… we need to live the gospel, not just talk about it. It was an interesting homily to say the least.
 
Yup. Sometimes jokes and stories can be used to emphasise home a message. Perhaps it is difficult for the average Catholics to understand the needs for fasting. I got questions from students (young people) who ask why we should abstain from meat on Fridays of Lent. They don’t know and don’t understand the reason for it.

However if we look into the life of Jesus, it was one of the first things he did as he started his ministry. We can bring home quite a lots of messages from the reading, not least that Jesus himself fasted. It’s important to note that he was able to outwit the Devil, albeit He himself is Jesus. It nevertheless is a common theme in his teaching later on that through prayer and fasting we can overcome temptation.

It was about the ‘tug of war’ between good and evil, between God and the devil, and how each of us is a rope being pulled one way or the other in this ‘tug of war’.
 
The priest spoke about temptation and Satan. One of Satan’s greatest tricks is to make us think that temptation is a morally neutral choice, as we might choose what color of jacket to wear today, or only a matter of personal preference, as one person might prefer chocolate ice cream and another prefers vanilla. Our priest talked about abortion, how some people frame it as a choice, or a preference, whether to have a baby or end its life. It is a temptation for many, and a sin if carried out. He spoke about resisting temptation as Jesus did. We will face temptation of one sort or another throughout our lives, and with God’s grace we can overcome it. We look forward to a time when we will be tempted no more, and that is when we make it to heaven.
