What we respect about other faiths

The few times I’ve been in this sub-forum, it seems very… hostile. So I thought I would start a general thread about what we respect about other religions that are not our own.

With Islam, I very much love the hijab and how women chose to wear this for reasons of modesty. It reminds me of how Catholic women had veils in church, or a nun’s habit. Praying five times a day is also quite noble.

With Judaism, the ancient traditions that are still held onto are very inspiring, and I like the ties of culture and religion.

Protestants, for all that we Catholics think they have a wrong interpretation, do speak of their faith quite often and try to live it. A very large amount carry Bibles with themselves as well, as I’ve seen around campus.

The dedication of other non-Catholics to the Scriptures is admirable, but I’m usually fond of other aspects of Christian or Christian-like traditions.

For instance, the Mormons are incredible genealogists. They eagerly assist anyone interested in researching their family history and offer extensive libraries.

We all Love Jesus, as He reveals Himself to us where ever we are on this journey to be with Him forever in Heaven!

So many of us were not Blessed to be taught the Truth of the Catholic Faith, even many raised in Catholic families!

Many have never been taught the Fullness of Truth that is Catholicism, through no fault of their own!

The Catechism of the Catholic Church teaches us;

"How are we to understand this affirmation, often repeated by the Church Fathers?335 Re-formulated positively, it means that all salvation comes from Christ the Head through the Church which is his Body:

**Basing itself on Scripture and Tradition, the Council teaches that the Church, a pilgrim now on earth, is necessary for salvation: the one Christ is the mediator and the way of salvation; he is present to us in his body which is the Church. He himself explicitly asserted the necessity of faith and Baptism, and thereby affirmed at the same time the necessity of the Church which men enter through Baptism as through a door. Hence they could not be saved who, knowing that the Catholic Church was founded as necessary by God through Christ, would refuse either to enter it or to remain in it.336

847 This affirmation is not aimed at those who, through no fault of their own, do not know Christ and his Church:**

**Those who, through no fault of their own, do not know the Gospel of Christ or his Church, but who nevertheless seek God with a sincere heart, and, moved by grace, try in their actions to do his will as they know it through the dictates of their conscience - those too may achieve eternal salvation.337**

I admire the zeal of our Evangelical Protestant brethren. I’ve often thought since becoming Catholic that if Catholics had half as much we’d have won the world for Christ by now.

And I admire how people desire to do all their faith requires of them even when it means sacrificing something of themselves. I don’t mean fanatics who fly planes into buildings, but those people who truly live out their faith in fidelity and love. Surely they are employing the grace God gave them.

I also like the traditions of other faiths and find them hopeful. Prayer beads and statues and incense and shrines are some of the things we have in common with the majority of the world’s people of faith. As Chesterton observed, we don’t differ all that much in our rites and practices but in our doctrine and dogma.

When I see anyone practicing his faith I am blessed. I see God’s grace at work whenever people follow the basic precepts of loving and serving God and others before themselves. And so does God.

I respect the rich liturgical history of both the Catholic and Orthodox Churches, and the “smells and bells” of Anglicans.

I respect the way the Orthodox fast, what with no dairy and Wednesdays & Fridays.

I respect the way the Muslims fast during Ramadan, one whole month, no food, during the day. THAT is hard core.

I respect the Buddhists for their striving to detatch from earthly things and finding the middle way.

I Love the mystical traditions found among the sufi muslims and the rich philosophy of the jews and the protestants well…at least the speak up about their faith.
