What went wrong in Mark 8:22?

In Mark 8:22 Jesus heals a blind man, but it took two attempts to fully heal him. I am trying to understand what happened here and what it tells us about Jesus and physical healing. Could use some insight if you have it…
 
Commentators have typically understood Jesus to be acting symbolically in this gradual healing. Jesus healed the man gradually as a symbol of the gradual understanding (“seeing”) that the disciples had of Jesus as messiah.
