What were the intended goals of Vatican II, and were those goals achieved?

V2 is a little like this guy who kept throwing things into his closet, opening it a few inches then closing it, saying one day he will straighten it out. Then one day he opens the closet wide, and gets hit with tons of stuff.

Trent had addressed many of the pastoral and doctrinal issues that had arisen. It did an excellent job, taking into account new information, new developments, new problems, of recent generations.

V1 was interrupted by war. It should have been resumed, or followed up, let’s say in the 1890s, 1920s, and 1950s, in periods of semi stability.

Moderate changes could have been made, with attention to follow up. Reforms might have been made without throwing out Tradition.

If a powerful looking tree is “suddenly” blown over by a strong wind, research will likely show there were problems building up for a long time, out of sight

If I could re write history:
  • Pope Pius calls a council in 1950
  • No session during 1951 or 1952. Bishops stay in their diocese, supervising implementation, and preparing for next session.
  • In 1953, repeat cycle.
The problem with V2 is first, it was postponed way too long; second, it took place during time of turbulence;

Third, they met in 4 consecutive years. This meant in sessions 2,3, 4, bishops and their top aides were gone from their diocese for periods of time, while sessions 1, 2, 3 were being implemented.

By what measure was it “postponed way too long”? That’s like saying someone other than the Holy Spirit was in charge.
