I also agree with one of the precepts that the Church has lost political power and influence. Between the Pope and Oprah, who has more influence over everyday Americans today? Thats a telling story there.

Some 5,6,7 years or more ago, I used to think that the ‘new evangelization’ was an indicator of the resurgence of the Catholic Church. I no longer believe that a resurgence is in the cards of trends. However, circumstances, events and God are another unpredictable, as to timing, factor. Medjugorje, Garabandal, et al, Gods providence can provide.
There is a story about a Bishop that he has made known to others. He believes that he will retire soon. But that his successor will be persecuted and he believes/predicts that the following successor will die a martyr. Thats my thinking also.
I was impressed by the book Triumph: The Power and Glory of the Catholic Church.

Its an essentially undry Catholic Church History book that entertainingly, more so than other books, tells the Church’s history of battling opposing philosophies. More often there is a pattern of an opposing philosophy to the Church, persecuting Catholics, legislating against it and either the state or mob rule killing us and confiscating Church property. Some variant of that will happen again in Europe soon, will happen here in the U.S. and it will resemble or be the culmination of the French Revolution in its fight for absolutes of freedom and equality which are competing philosophies , by the way, think democracy vs communism. Of which this enabling philosophy(french revolution, secularism, liberalism, modernism) is against God and the Catholic Church. Of course Europe will be exposed to external foes as oppressors also. Something that the US is never likely to suffer, although attacks will come, they will not be of an invading foreign swarm.
Basically Secularism in mob rule will attack the Church. The Church’s fight against ‘modernism’,‘liberalism’ and ‘secularism’ the philosophies and the people who cant but think within the age that they are trapped behaving as with organized statism or even mobs against the Church. Catholicism and its intellectualism and thought, its vast philosophy organized to the world, is the only remedy against being trapped within the thinking of an age.
The rise and conquest of Islam and Secularization and all its attending philosophies are inherent. Catholic Eschatology tells us about Islam and the conquest of Europe coincident with a time where black is white and falsehoods are presented as truth. Medjugorje and Garabandal might serve as tonics if they come to fruition. But the Lord has lots of suffering and purification for this culminating age. We are in it.

Now that you mention it, I just read in our local Catholic newspaper about this group trying to remove property tax exemption from places of worship. Well, in essence they want to impose strict rules on which religions can avail of tax exemption and those who would qualify should conform to state standards on civil rights. Which means the church should be supportive of same-sex marriage and abortion, among others, to avail of tax exemptions.
