What wil happen to the social order in the United States if we get hit with an EMP device?

God does indeed use us as his instruments. Of course the government and military need to do everything in their power to try and prevent these types of tragedies from happening. But for us civilians, there is little we can do but to pray and have faith in God.
Sometimes people overemphasize trust so much that they seem to be saying it is God’s only gift, or that we do not need to use His other gifts.

If I asked, does God also give us the gifts of wisdom, prudence, temperance, and fortitude, would you deny that? Of course not.

As a practical matter, civilians are essential to support the military. WWII was won as much by the merchant marine, Rosie the Riveter, civilian shipyard workers, auto workers, and farmers as by the soldiers, sailor, airmen and marines.

In the event of an EMP attack, I would be the most popular person in my neighborhood. I have a deep insulated basement and lots of canned food and about 30 cases of pop. I live within walking distance to Home Depot and Lowes and would need to get a hand operated pump before they were all gone.

No, I will not give you my address. 😛

What does any of this have to do with my post? I’m confused.
I’m sorry. I thought I was clear.

Maybe Traders post helps

Yes, but I do not see how civilian support can avert a nuclear device.

SPOILER ALERT!

Sometimes in my bleaker moments, I think back to the Kurt Russell movie, Escape from LA, where the “McGuffin” is the control of a satellite EMP weapon–and the anti-hero, “Snake” Plisken (Russell) gets of hold of, and in reaction to the ultra dark, increasingly tyrannical world, Snake pushes the buttons that command a world-wide EMP surge, killing all electronics, sending us back to a “dark age”–and freeing us from all government and media tyrannies–and I find myself saying, when I look at our world, with all of its electronic distractions and opiates:

"Push the button, Snake!!!"

Actually, it is more like a reality bomb.
But that is designed to eliminate all matter in the universe (with the exception of the Daleks, who were in a specially shielded spot of the Medusa Cascade) by cancelling the electrical bond within all atoms that the wave hit.

LOL! This is precisely what I thought of as well! I searched for the clip of Davros saying this on the net last week, but couldn’t find the clip in an unaltered format.

Found a couple of interesting video clips:

click on the book cover and then when the next page opens, scroll down to the two clips

This is just one more looming threat to worry about that I have no control over. Add it to the list along with flesh-eating bacteria, global warming, alien abduction, rogue asteroids, killer bees, NDM-1, and the commercial extinction of bananas.

Actually, there ARE things that YOU can do …
  1. You can PREPARE … to camp out in your house. Make sure you can have water, food, some way of cooking without utilities.
  2. If you have your own business, figure out how you could restore your own equipment if it burns out due to an EMP power surge.
For example, if you have computer controlled equipment, figure out how to bypass the computer controls if they burn out. Or, how would you rewind electric motors.

If you work for an electric utility, what can you do with your capital spending to include EMP hardening. OR, if you are tied in to a grid, can you disconnect yourself in some way, so if the grid goes down, you don’t go down with it.

OR, if only to lessen your vulnerability to one of those Chinese SCADA cyber attacks … WHICH happen every day … you just don’t read much about it. Unless you tune in.

If you are an auto mechanic, how would you cobble up an old fashioned carburetor and distributor to replace the electronic/computerized controls.

Some people have had dry runs and practice sessions recently with four foot snowfalls and hurricane flooding, so they had to get by for a day or two or five on their own.

There are many camping catalogs … www.cheaperthandirt.com for example … so you can buy for cheap some basic water purification equipment.

www.backwoodshome.com and www.backhomemagazine.com for some elementary skills.

As long as Iran and North Korea are building nukes and rockets … at the cost of starving their people … then we need to have some low cost self-protection.

Not talking about billions of dollars or devoting your whole income or selling your house and moving to northern Idaho.

Just learning some basic stuff.

Pays off in merely a hurricane.

Could REALLY pay off if, God forbid, one of these nuts decides to actually set off one of their nukes … just remember the 12th Imam.

Well I can do something about killer bees too, I can move to Minnesota. But you don’t see me doing that now, do you. Although I was considering this morning how I really have to put together some basic staples, a box of saltines and some Skippy and raisins, and some water. Maybe the barrel of survival meals from Costco. Just kidding, those are pretty dismal. Honestly a much more real concern for me here in California is an earthquake.

MRE entrees are much cheaper than getting the whole entire MRE and are more compact and take less storage space.

Don’t have a Costco near me. So I can’t comment on their survival meals.

MRE’s often come with Tabasco Sauce to kill the flavor … or “enhance” the flavor.

But, seriously … it’s good that you are thinking about it.

Start small.

Get the catalogs.

Think about … use the earthquake damage or “potential” earthquake damage as a focus. If your utilities got cut off for a few days, how would you get by?

Interesting email with some good links that just came in. Not available on a Web page:

In the past week, there have been lots of news about China. First, the DOD annual report to Congress on Military and Security Developments in the PRC was released. There have been news stories about the document, but I thought you’d like to see it … and make up your mind on it. I sought some experts’ opinion on it; and they thought it parsed the real threat China poses. One made the point that military doctrine measure threats as: capability + intent. PRC capability is … without a doubt … growing. It just announced it will increase its defense budget by 12.5%; it has two new fighters in development – the J-20 and the J-15. It has three carriers on the drawing boards, with one undergoing sea trials [and their state media has announced it will be used for “scientific research and training”; it is building a new ICBM and increasing its nuclear stockpile; it is building counter-carrier ballistic missiles; it continues it efforts to put a man on the moon; it continues to refine its counter space capabilities; and it conducts cyber attacks on the US. We know the People’s Republic activities worries its neighbors … as Viet Nam has taken delivery of a guided missile frigate and ordered six Kilo-class diesel-electric submarines as well as 12 Sukhoi Su-30MK2 warplanes from Russia. The Philippines has also purchased a retired US Coast Guard Cutter that has been converted to a surface warship that is being deployed to the Spratley islands – where they are in a dispute with China over claims. What the experts noted was that the report down-played China’s intent.

You can find the report at: http://www.defense.gov/pubs/pdfs/2011_CMPR_Final.pdf

For a good article on the report see Bill Gertz’s piece in the Washington Times: washingtontimes.com/news/2011/aug/25/beijing-to-expand-its-nuclear-stockpile/?page=all#pagebreak

And … for an extraordinary piece on Chinese cyber attacks, the link below describes a show that appeared on Chinese TV … with B-roll appearing behind it showing a People’s Liberation Army software attack on dissidents through a web site in the US. See: theepochtimes.com/n2/index2.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=60619&pop=1&page=0&Itemid

Many of you have been following the development of the J-20 … but few have noticed much about the J-15. A good story appeared on it in the NY Times: nytimes.com/2011/04/26/world/asia/26fighter.html?ref=china

Finally, a good number of you wrote me regarding China’s refusal to pay on the debt owed to US citizens (See: afa.org/PresidentsCorner/Notes/Notes_8-23-11.pdf) Now some news agencies have picked up the story. For example here is one report: foxnews.com/opinion/2011/08/26/its-time-for-china-to-pay-its-debts-to-united-states/
