What will happen to "Latin" under Pope Francis?

I hope the Holy Father will continue to allow the EF. But I suspect he will be a Liturgical Liberal. I would prefer a more traditional Pontiff but the Holy Ghost did guide his election so I really cant question him. I will continue to belong to the SSPX as I feel this is the true way to practice the faith. Just my humble opinion.

Then we will continue to have to agree to disagree about the “true” way to practice the faith. Right now, the Holy Father seems much more concerned with worrying about the poor among us, and I find that compelling and refreshing.

I will be interested in hearing much more from him about this “For the poor” mentality. Its a good outlook, but I think it leaves a lot of questions unanswered. Who are the poor? In what way are they poor? In what way are we to minister to them? How does this effect the position of the church? As some have pointed out, even if the church gave away the $8B in the Vatican bank, it could give each of the abjectly destitute people in the world, perhaps $3-5. And what position does this leave for the non-poor? Certainly they should help, but we also cannot risk needlessly alienating them with a “the church exists mostly for other people” message…afterall, it requires financial resources to minister, and these are best obtained from the non-poor. And what about after people are no longer poor? Certainly the most humane thing is to help lift people out of poverty, rather than simply surviving through it; yet if we do that, how will we avoid repeating what we have seen in the developed world, where the message of the faith is often left behind with the lower social class?

It will probably take us quite a while to get the answers to these questions, and far longer to see how they are put into practice. Maybe its a sign about the number of us who grow up used to political environments where you more or less know the what and how and when (at least ideally) of whoever comes into power…not so with the Holy Father, at least not this Holy Father.

As much as we all love our vernacular, I don’t see the benefits of suppressing Latin again. We can work on the poor and work on unification through Latin in the liturgy as well, no?

Seeing that the SSPX has no canonical status nor a legitimate ministry in the Church (to paraphrase Pope Benedict XVI), how is this a "true way to practice the faith?"

Pope Francis was in the Seminary at a time when Latin was required for ordination. In his early years as a priest that was the only language allowed for the Liturgy and the Sacrements.
Rest assured that Pope Francis knows Latin. His may be a bit rusty, but it will return faster than one can think! I definately do not think he will abrogate its use. Remember, the use of Latin as a universal language, is one of the minor things that unites Catholics.
Latin is still required for ordination. Many bishops either don’t know that, or don’t care.

I think we need to have a bit more faith in [God] working through the Holy Father – [God] clearly has been working already, as we saw in his election as Pope to begin with. 😃
Edited that, so you can see how peculiar your statement is.

As far as I can see, from a traditionalist point of view, the Pope has done nothing except some theatrical demonstrations which indicate that he is not as concerned with traditions associated with his station as his predecessor was.

Pretty strong and disrespectful commentary.

Yes I know He is God. What I pointing out was that the poster was saying that he/she knew His mind, as well. I hope we are not heading down the road where Catholics, like some branches of protestantism, think they have a hotline to God and see His will in what pleases them.

The other is merely an echo of what both pogressive and traditionalist catholics have been saying: the shoes, the mozetta, the stole, the blessing, etc, one camp with approval, the other not. It’s fair comment.

I would say, long term, that a priest, bishop, boss, teacher, general or police sargeant who does away with his symbols of office and says, “hey, call me Dave”, may have problems, later, asserting himself over his underlings.

You can’t be a child’s friend AND parent; we don’t take orders from friends.

How does this equate to “theatrical” demonstration? That is very heavy language that puts His Holiness in a light utterly unbefitting his office. Beside that, it imputes your knowledge of his underlying intentions, which God has forbidden any of us to judge.

Theatrical: suggestive of the theater or of acting; artificial, pompous, spectacular, or extravagantly histrionic

I suspect he won’t encourage it but neither will he stop existing EF services.

The most he might do is discourage stand-alone EF parishes but there are not many of those anyway.
