That’s a link to page of Irish martyrs, many of whom died horribly as well as numerously, because they wouldn’t recant their Faith.

I was thinking if they come to kill me maybe it wouldn’t be so bad, they might just shoot me and get it over with. I know, sounds like a stupid thought, but I just wondered of my fellow American and Western easy civilization fellow Catholics, did you ever wonder, if it came to that, would you disavow the Eucharist, the Pope and the Mary and the Saints or let them kill you, if that were, indeed, the choice?

We were talking about last week. I don’t know. Having read the article, I can’t imagine myself going through the pains of torture without recanting. A shot or beheading and it is done is one thing but continued, unrelenting torture, don’t think I could handle it.

When I converted 7 years ago, I went through lots of persectution. Most of it was verbal, but I was not able to see my grandchildren, my whole family who are Unitied Methodist verbally abused me almost constantly and even co-workers made fun of me and looked down upone me. The more persectution, the more I prayed and the Holy Spirit gave me the strenght to get through it. It is was physical torture, I am not sure how I would have done it. I do know from what I went through, when you stand up for our Blessed Mother and Holy Mother Church, you recieve graces to endure things that you never thought you could.

The persecution has now gone for me, as all those people got tired of doing what they were doing. They found out that no matter what they did, it would not make me leave the church. In the midst of things, the Holy Spirit brought information to my mouth that I had studied and was able to witness. All the people that did the persecution know I still love Jesus, and will not leave Holy Mother Church for anyone or anything.

I hope through all I went through that it will bring some of those people to conversion.

I do often think about that happening to me. I seriously can’t imagine myself being so brave, but I pray I would find the strength to hold fast to my beliefs.

The Faith,

bring the scourges, bring the cruel knives, I shall weather them for the Lord is my strength and shield

God, Country, Family in that order, and I’m probably gonna go down swingin’!

Hope it never comes to that.

I already know I’m not that brave. But then, we all already know that if every Catholic was so brave, there wouldn’t be any Catholics left 😉 That’s why they practiced their faith in hiding in caves and in secret house meetings during the persecutions.

Bravery doesn’t mean you ALWAYS have to rush the machine gun nest!

Discretion is the better part of valor… 😃

What amount of suffering isn’t worth making it to Heaven when it’s all over?

I can only hope and pray that God’s gentle and unending love would see me through the pain, if it was drawn-out. He did for us, after all.

I would stand up for my God, Christ and the Catholic Church. So yes I am willing to die for my belief in Christ as the Son of God.

God Bless,
Bernadette173.

I sincerely pray that I would have the courage to give up my life, if need be, in defence of my faith in Jesus and the church which he established. If that ever came to pass, you can bet that I’d be praying like never before for the grace to remain steadfast in my faith. I’d also be constantly asking for the intercessory prayers of martyred saints like Maximilian Kolbe and Thomas More. St. Thomas More famously said, “I die the King’s good servant, but God’s first.”:gopray: Finally it’s important to remember what Our Lord said: “If you deny me before men I will deny you before my father.” Even a martyr’s death seems more appealing than an eternity away from God.:crying:

Now, this may be by materialist atheist background talking, but isn’t it better to make the other guy the martyr?

If everyone had laid down and died at the hands of the Moslems invading Europe from Spain and the Ottoman Empire to be martyred wouldn’t that have been the obvious end of Christianity?

They’d have turned the Vatican into a mosque like they did Sancta Sophia in Constantinople.

So, its probably not what one should die for, but one should die fighting for.

I’ve been through some pretty bad things already, in my defense of being catholic. Also, when I feel threatened, I have a tendency to get angry and snarky, and I definitely go for “fight” in the “fight or flight” scenario.

I would die for the Church. With any luck, I’ll get a witty one liner in relating to my method of torture that will be so awesome that tons of kids, a few hundred years hence, will be confirmed in the name of Amanda. 😃

I’ve thought about how strong I think I would actually be if I was being persecuted. It’s scary to think about though! I mean, I’d like to think I’d be strong enough, no matter what, but I’m weak. What would happen, then, if I recanted and saved my life. I would feel terrible for the rest of my life! I personally think, just going by what I think I could take, that if someone was truly going to kill me if I didn’t recant, it would depend on how they went about it. If they were going to actually torture me, I’m actually afraid I wouldn’t be able to bear it. I mean, I’d pray like crazy but who knows…but if they were just going to kill me outright, and I knew that, I know I wouldn’t recant.

I personally am pretty scared to think about it!

That’s not the choice, though. This is you: one guy. Surrounded by them: way too many guys. They have the guns. You’re naked. Recant or die is the choice. Die quietly with whatever dignity your naked self can muster or trying to take one with you, might be another part of the choice, but making them the martyrs - not the choice.

Recant or die?

Me. too. I also have the same answer you have. If we’re lucky our hearts will give out from the stress!

I live in a state that respect my right to keep and bear arms. And I have guns too. And the training to use them (thanks Uncle Sam!).

In addition to the concealed carry permit I have one in the car and several throughout the home.

Trust me, even in your scenario the other people are being martyred with me. I just don’t have it in me to lay down and be murdered alone. I want company. 👍

I don’t know if you are messing around or just evading the question.

Recant or die is the question. The only question.
