What would be the consequence or new chain of events had Adam refused eve's "forbidden fruit" obtained from the tree of knowledge of good and evil?

I realize this is a bizarre question.

Eve would have been banished from the garden alone. Perhaps Adam would have succumbed to temptation years later just to join eve. Or perhaps God would have made another eve for Adam. Speculation. Guess this could never be answered.

Since Adam was the one who was told directly by God not to eat the forbidden fruit, I think his sin was perhaps greater than Eve’s sin. Eve knew about the prohibition but hadn’t been created yet when God gave the prohibition. So I think we can speculate that she probably first learned of the prohibition from her husband Adam telling her about it. I think that her disobedience was more to Adam while Adam’s disobedience was to God. If Adam would have been obedient then perhaps God would have left it up to Adam to correct her. An analogy is how, in the military, service members are told to handle problems at the lowest level possible and to use the chain of command. But only God knows for sure how things would have happened.

Hello,

I listened to a very good audiobook by Dr. Brant Pitre recently (I can’t remember the title as I’m tearing through his work this Lent! 🙂 ) which posited that Adam also sinned in not defending his wife from the Serpent’s advances. As we know, Adam was with Eve when the Serpent spoke to her. Dr. Pitre suggests that Adam’s sin was one of cowardice in not defending Eve. I’m spending a bit of time wondering whether the first sin of disobedience was Eve’s in eating the fruit, or Adam’s in not caring for his spouse as God directed? Fascinating stuff!

I’m not sure that this answers your question but, as with everything else Dr. Pitre has to say; this suggestion has turned my understanding for the story of he Garden of Eden on it’s head!

I would heartily recommend Dr. Pitre’s audiobooks to everyone. I have recently begun to properly study my Bible (as opposed to reading through it in a dry ‘face value’ fashion) and I could spend three lifetimes mining gold there!

Have a lovely day!

Pax Christi!

Adam had no previous experience with a liar, or anyone or anything threatening Eve. Both disobeyed, but had never talked with anyone but God, and certainly not with a tempter interested in their demise.

Cool question, though. In this life, we’ll probably never know.

God bless.

Satan knew it was easier for him to tempt Eve than Adam and it was easier for Adam to be tempted by Eve than the other way around.

The same is still true today. Men are very weak when tempted by a woman. And this is what drives the porn and prostitution industry.

Since we are engaging in Spiritual Fiction, how about:

Adam’s sin was not trusting in God and choosing Eve over Him.
The knowledge of good and evil could be obtained only through death. How does one grasp the reality of courage and cowardice unless one is willing or unwilling to die.
After Eve ate the apple, Adam knew he would lose her.
CCC: “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh.” Man discovers woman as another “I”, sharing the same humanity. Man and woman were made “for each other” - not that God left them half-made and incomplete: he created them to be a communion of persons, in which each can be “helpmate” to the other, for they are equal as persons (“bone of my bones. . .”) and complementary as masculine and feminine. In marriage God unites them in such a way that, by forming “one flesh”, they can transmit human life . . .
So he ate the apple to remain with her.

As the father of faith, Abraham proved himself worthy, willing to sacrifice his son. As precious as was Isaac, this masterpiece of creation, Abraham demonstrated his love, obedience and trust in the Creator, who is Love Itself.
Adam did not have such faith, hope and trust in God.
Eve was deceived, Adam chose.

And with that choice, we fell. Sin enters human nature.
In his brokenness, Adam now betrays her, unwilling to accept his guilt and repent.
And Adam said: The woman, whom you gave me to be my companion, gave me of the tree, and I did eat.
The wound deepens.

So, if this is had happened, what if Adam said no, if he had trusted in God?
Maybe, as with Abraham, they would have been spared. Eve would have been directed to the Tree of Eternal Life to be healed.

If we had done this we would be in paradise, face-to-face with God, where we are called and Christ has prepared our path.

The question is, if neither of them had sinned, what purpose would Satan have? If there was no original sin, Jesus would not have needed to be born human and be crucified, Satan would have no reason to even try and tempt people, so…

I find it extremely curious that since we all know Satan must have Gods permission before doing anything…why he received permission to tempt adam and eve to the extent he did? God knew adam and eve did not know anything about lying, deceit, temptation, etc. it is curious why God would allow someone as intelligent and cunning as Satan to have contact with such naive beings as adam and eve.
