This same question (What would count as absolute proof that God exists?) was asked on another forum, and id thought id ask it on here, basicaly she answers by saying that we can never KNOW if God does or does not exist, because theres always a posibility that some intelligent alien is doing it/pretending to be God. what do u guys think, what would convince YOU that God is real Catholics, how can you be sure sure that God is real/Catholicism is The Truth? How do you know that its not a alien like the woman says. Here is her answer:

"Again, a new contemporary source referring to Jesus would only support his existence, not his identity nor the existence of a god. So that wouldn’t do it either.

Same goes for a document written by Jesus himself, EVEN IF it could ever be shown to be genuinely by him, which it almost certainly couldn’t.

As for your other examples. Proof that we were created, for instance. Well, for starters, what might such proof possibly look like? It is certainly conceivable that we would find something that would challenge our current understanding, but how would that prove a creator rather than simply flag up another question to which we don’t currently have an answer? The lack of an answer for something doesn’t have to mean that Goddidit!

In any case, even if there WERE something that pointed incontrovertibly towards a creator, why should that mean it was a god who did the creating? Why couldn’t it be a super-intelligent alien civilisation that did it? For the record, I am not for one moment suggesting the existence of a super-intelligent alien civilisation, merely pointing out that God is not the default explanation!

God speaking to me personally? Well, we already know that the brain is very suggestible and that it can create very powerful illusions, even when not under the influence of drugs. So no, that wouldn’t be reliable evidence either. Besides, who’s to say that, if there WERE a real voice, it would have to be a god and not that super-intelligent alien again?

What might be evidence? Well, if prayer were consistently shown to work, that would get me thinking. Especially if, say, Christian prayers were always answered but Islamic/Hindu/Jain prayers were not. (Though even so, it could still just be a super-intelligent alien civilisation having some fun at our expense.) In reality, every properly conducted study has shown that prayer does NOT work – there is no correlation between prayer and outcomes.

Perhaps if this supposed God were to tell us something that we did not already know and which we could then test for ourselves and see that it was true: a cure for some currently totally incurable disease, for instance. (Carl Sagan wrote amusingly of the way alleged messages from God or aliens are invariably of the banal variety: ‘Be kind to one another’, ‘War is bad’; and never anything IMPRESSIVE, such as how to cure cancer or a comprehensible explanation of quantum mechanics or proof of Goedel’s Theorem.) But this, too, would only be evidence of a superior intelligence, and it could just as easily be those super-intelligent aliens again.

Actually, that isn’t true. It would be FAR MORE LIKELY to be super-intelligent aliens than God. Why? Because we know of natural processes by which intelligence forms on Earth (i.e. as a result of evolution by natural selection), and it therefore wouldn’t be unreasonable to assume that something either identical or very similar to evolution by natural selection had been at work on another planet in this vast universe, and had been so for longer than here on Earth and had therefore resulted in super-intelligence that might appear truly god-like to us inferior beings. It would still have been an entirely natural process.

But there is NO mechanism we know of which could possibly give rise to a god. The Christian claim that God was simply always there just won’t wash: there’s no reason to believe it, it’s simply special pleading, dreamed up, invented, imagined, as a way of trying to prevent the rest of the story simply falling apart. It has nothing whatsoever to support it beyond the wishful thinking of those who want to believe the rest of the story.

So I find it impossible to imagine what proof there might be for God, because it would always be possible to imagine a far more plausible naturalistic explanation (and, for the reason given above, even the most outlandish naturalistic explanation will always be more plausible than an uncreated god).

I can’t prove that there isn’t a god either, of course; but there is absolutely no good reason to believe in one, and that’s why I don’t. I don’t believe in a super-intelligent alien civilisation either, by the way: it’s just a less preposterous hypothesis than an uncreated god."

It was once said “I think, therefore I am…”

Proof enough for me…

Ezekiel 37:13 You shall know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves and make you come up out of them, my people!

explain to me how something can come from nothing.

Even the people who saw God’s mighty hand at work, didn’t believe it and built a golden calf at the base of Mount Sinai.

What would you do if you saw the angle of death pass over your home and kill the first born of all the Egyptians?

What would you do if you saw a pillar of fire hold back the Egyptian Army the night before you passed thru the Red Sea?

Then you saw your leader, Moses, ascend up the mountain and you assumed he was never coming back… Build a golden calf??

Like St. Thomas… Unless I see his wounds and put my hand in his side, I will not believe… And, a week later Jesus shows up when Thomas confesses “My Lord and My God”

Some people, even is they see the face of God, will not believe.
So, for some, there is no absolute proof

My best one is a variation of St. Anselm: “If I think in God, If I have in my mind the idea of God, it means that God exists!”

I think this statement is flawed. We can also think or imagine aliens, but that does not mean they are. As time goes on people think about alot of concepts, but it doesnt make them true.

I agree with your first statement, this could all be one big matrix like in the movie The Matrix, but who knows? I think, therefore i am, that makes perfect sense to me.

What are we suppose to make of the other alternative theories like we came from big bang then we evolved, or that were product of some quantum fluctuation

Reason

there will never be absolute scientific evidence to prove that God exists and for the empiricists this unfortunately will make it difficult for them to believe in God.

I am like Thomas, i want to see to believe. We have brains. God could show all humans hell and heaven and speak to us, show us a few miacles etc. I know i would believe in him, and also the majority of people if not all would too i think.

I’ve pondered on this question before, my answer is, God could do a much better job at making his existence known to us. Maybe to the people in the past it didnt take too much evidence, but now were in a new age. We need more. Theres even technology out there that beams something into a mind and that person will literally see the image of Jesus or hear God talking to them.

I think the definitive proof is having folks that we know have died, coming back from the dead and verifying that one, there is a life after death and two, that there is a being that has control of the universe.

There are a bunch of folks who have had this experience, including some friends who I’ve known. So for me, it is a done deal, God is what He claims to be.

There could be some brain neurological explanations for this, i think you mean NDE’s. There are alot of these on youtube, people seeing hell, Jesus, etc. Alot of them dont agree on basic things ,so i dont trust testimonies of people coming back from the dead.

Can you elaborate on your friends testimonies.

As a Catholic I believe in the Big Bang and evolution. But I believe that without a design and a designer, those two events would have been impossible. Random chance could no more be responsible for the Universe we see than a tornado could rip through a trailer park and leave behind a perfectly formed pyramid…

God said “Let there be Light”… Pretty good description of the Big Bang, no?

God bless

The thing is its not necessary to have scientific evidence to believe in God, first of all it takes a act of faith which is given by grace by God which then leads to a reason of that Faith. Stuff like Aquinas’s First cause argument or something along those lines could suffice as the reason.

Plus it is very possible that God did it in the most loving way and its more loving for you to have to seek God and have to get to know him then him just showing you everything beyond a reasonable doubt.

The way science works and the way God is Science will never be able to explain God. It may be able to hint at God but never say here is God, because God is supernatural and science studies the natural. That is why empiricists who believe that Science is the end all be all struggle with Miracles because miracles are of a supernatural nature. Meaning it can’t be studied by science and give a defiant definition at what happened, it can only explain, that science can’t explain this.

Consider this… “To those that believe, no proof is needed… To those that disbelieve, no proof will suffice…”

We will know, one way or the other, when we gather before the throne on Judgment Day… Or we just rot in the ground and there is no Judgment Day…

Personally God has done things in my life to ensure me beyond any shadow of a doubt that not only does He exist and that I can believe in Him, but that He also believes in me… If God moves in your life this way, you have no doubt… Otherwise you just have to make the best guess with the evidence available…

May God bless you and guide you in your journey…

You know, this is so insulting. I am sure you did not intend it to be insulting, but nevertheless it is. The first part is true, no doubt. The problem is the second part. Not just it is absurd, but also it is offensive. How dare anyone make an assumption that non-believers are so stubbornly and willfully blind that they would refuse to accept even the most convincing physical evidence?

Now to answer the OP’s question: if god would accept the open invitation to my house, and would be willing to conduct a decent, mutually respectful conversation with me, I would trust my intellect to find out if I am talking to an impostor or the real McCoy. And if the other party would be an impostor, but convincing enough, then what is problem? A good enough god-imitator is just as good as the real thing.

But even if I would be convinced that I am talking to the real god, there would be no compelling reason to either “love” or “worship” that god. (I mention this to enlighten those nincompoops who keep saying that to know god’s existence would limit our free will in any meaningful way).

while this may not be wrong it is as shown later very offensive to non believers

lets keep this discussion a philosophical one.

Like can there be a Scientific Proof of god, if there can’t be one, is there a way for empiricists to believe in God?

If no scientific proof can work then what kind of scientific proof will work. A metaphysical one, a theological one and other possible ones.

Lets have a philosophical discussion on this topic as it is the philosophy board.

Personally, I’d believe in God if he appeared to me.
