What Would Martin Luther King, Jr. Have Thought of Abortion?

Impossible to say. While a master orator who was devastatingly effective on the subject of racism, MLK was hardly a saint in all aspects of his life. A tragic number of his contemporaries in the civil rights movement went on to be open supporters of Planned Parenthood or apathetic on the subject at best. Ironic since life is the most fundamental of civil rights.

Humans are strange critters, aren’t we?
 
I heard a stat where 5 black babies are aborted for every one white baby.

Yet so many Catholics sadly are pro choice

Not only abortion, but many other things.

I think he would be very upset.
 
Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Baptist minister. His role as pastor is often overlooked in memorials I’ve seen.

As the nation today marks the contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., his niece Alevda King says her uncle would be pro-life and battle against abortion if he were alive today. As the daughter of Rev. A. D. King, a leader in the Civil Right’s movement, King sees the pro-life cause as a continuation of the Civil Rights movement in which her uncle was a prominent leader.

Isn’t Jesse Jackson too? Heard him denouncing abortion lately?

MLK certainly cited the same principles in fighting racism that we use in fighting abortion today. But so did Jackson then, but not today.

As I said, humans are strange critters. Best not to put words in his mouth. Appreciate him for the greatness he did display, not what we think he’d be today.

It is relevant to all the people who pat themselves on the back that they were there helping champion the cause of African American’s along side Martin Luther, and then turn around and deny the rights of a child in the womb.

It is relevant to pro life African Americans who didn’t know MLK was more than likely pro-life. I don’t think the US would have advanced as far as it has in the area of civil rights without the efforts of Dr. King, and to know his philosophy leaned toward pro-life thinking is quite relevant. The pro-life movement isn’t “desperate”. It is helpful to know a man of King’s stature was more than likely pro-life, especially for those who are so proudly pro-abortion and think they are helping out the cause of human rights as the previous poster alluded.
 
Interestingly, here we are on Martin Luther King day and the only threads about it on CAF are abortion threads. 🤷

Monday was a Federal Holiday here in the United States for MLK so the topic IS newsworthy. I don’t believe you Brits have such a record for recognizing significant minorities over there - do you?

It’s a double-edged sword that Reverend King that, initially, supported Margret Sanger’s eugenics project because he wanted to eliminate poverty by preventing out-of-wedlock births.

However, I don’t know if it was readily known back in the mid-1960’s that Planned Parenthood would become the nation’s NUMBER ONE KILLER of African-American BABIES (more die by abortion than all other causes of death combined).

But it’s not known as a fact. It’s some relative of them saying “I think he would have been pro-life” for a modern politicial motive. If it suited them better they could equally have said the opposite.
