What would the church do if a country banned it as a punishment for not accepting women as priests?

I remember when the labour party in my country (UK) told catholic adoption agencies to either allow children to be adopted by gay couples or stop adopting children out and they chose the second.

The Church has been banned many times in many countries.
It simply goes underground.

There might be a group that calls itself “Catholic” and obeys the government. But they’re not really the Catholic Church

When Poland could not make Jadwiga their queen, they made her their King.

There are often innovative solutions we do not see.

The Church has been banned by countries before. It seems the countries are the ones who have to change or die, not the Church. The UK should know this.

  • Anglicans in post-Henrican England
  • The Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association
I’m sure there have been others.

Have you read the novel “Come Rack, Come Rope!” by Robert Hugh Benson?

It is a very accurate description of what happened in England last time it was illegal to ordain a Catholic priest.

Another well know persecution that also forbade ordinations was in Japan, dramatized in the novel “Silence”.

Nations prohibiting practice of our Faith is not new, it happens today. The Church grows under persecution!

The Catholic Church survived a period when being a Christian meant being put to death.

I’m sure the church would ignore such a law.
Yes. Because such a law is inherently, irretrievably, irreconcilably illegal, invalid, and immoral.

In a western nation:

Would the church sell/shut all it’s churches and go underground or just ignore the government and keep paying fines and going to court?

I understand about England in the past but today is different. Firstly the whole world will see it and secondly they surely would have to have the same rule for the muslims?

The Church would simply go underground … And I would be there also.

More likely, as we just saw with Beto, is that the government would start taxing “non-conforming “ churches (meaning those that refused same-sex “weddings,” who refused to ordain women, who refused to ordain those openly gay). This would also presumably mean taking away the charitable deduction from those donating to such churches. So it would mean persecution via the tax code. Not that any of this would be constitutional of course. Of course, fiddling with the First Amendment isn’t out of the question for the next generation of politicians.

Then just pay the darned taxes.

Let the parishioners (the ones who can afford it, that is) make larger contributions on Sundays to cover it. Catholics get off fairly easy on offerings, as churches go.

I’ve heard of it. Pretty hard to go wrong with any of his books. I’ll put it on my shelf of good intentions.

Look at England today (my ancestral country — I sometimes view my embracing the Church as fixing a 400-year mistake). Which church has the strongest voice? Which church has the most people attending it on Sundays? It isn’t the Anglicans.

I’ve been searching for the movie “For Greater Glory” (the Eva Longoria film about the Mexican cristeros ) on Redbox, Netflix, Amazon Prime, no luck. Guess I’m going to have to end up renting it somewhere.

Right now, today, the world is watching the persecutions of the Church around the world. Take China for example, the world kinda does not really care, China does not care who is watching.

Muslims do not have ordination, they do not have priests or bishops or a single leader. Islam is far more like Protestantism than it is comparable to Catholicism. There are many different belief systems.

Your parish or local Knights of Columbus likely have some DVDs still laying around.

Surely you have read the maxim: “The power to tax is the power to destroy.” Catholics are notoriously poor givers, on average. Many now withhold contributions in the wake of the abuse settlements. When local parish churches are assessed property taxes, income taxes, and other legal dues equal to maybe 20 or 30 or 40% of their annual income, just where is that money to come from? At least half the parishes in our diocese run in the red now.

Who is in charge of their prayers at the mosque?
