I’m thinking I’d give 10% to my diocese and some money to the capuchins or another order. Then I’d get a maid and a driver and a cook and an accountant and a lawyer

How about you all?

Bokbok

I would take a trip rightaway to some lost paradise where I do not have to cook one bit just to decide what to do with the rest of the money

In the UK I think the odds are about fourteen million to one against winning the top prize. It means millions of other people have to loose, in order for someone to win. I don’t want to take money from people who can’t afford to bet every week, so I won’t buy a ticket.

Only a small fraction goes to good causes, so I give to charity in other ways. I really don’t consider the lottery as a bit of fun.

Sorry about that, but just my 2c.

I think for some people winning a vast sum of money can be very testing indeed.

It would of course feel like an instant relief from all life’s burdens and it would be I’m sure a relief from your existing life’s burdens but it would give you a whole new set of burdens you’d never dreamed of.

I think if The Lord wanted me to be rich I would’ve noticed by now. ⛱️

The Husband and I agree that with such a windfall we’d buy a house, but we have differing opinions as to what to do with the rest.

A French couple won the lotto ten years ago or so. Among other endeavors, they use part of the money to pay for the local elementary school’s lunch program. The quality of the meals has improved and every child is fed each day regardless of his/her family’s financial situation. This is the sort of thing I’d like to do.

Thought about this years ago, before the potential prize became so humongous…I’d pay for higher education for all parishioners anonymously, and fund our Outreach program for starters…

Jesus answered him, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain
and showed him all the kingdoms of the world
and their splendor.
“All this I will give you,” he said,
“if - you will bow down - and worship me.”

Jesus said to him, “Away from me, Satan!
For it is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God,
and serve him only.’”

Pay off the rest of my student loans and also what is left of the loan on my apartment.

If I win an enormous amount of money, then I would buy a piece of property (or several) and build a pre school, elementary school and finally an upper secondary school as there are no Catholic schools within reasonable distance. Lots of children and teenagers in the area though and more moving in as there are lots of apartments and houses being built in the next decades.

If there is some money left then I would quit my job, so someone else can have my permanent position, finish my studies and then do charity work until I die.

First tithe.

Second pay off the mortgage.

Third, quit my job(s) and drive away cackling.

I’d want to remain anonymous. Where I am, the only way to do that is to place the money in a trust. So that means lawyers and accountants and financial advisors. Yuck!

We’d pay off our home. Perhaps buy another that will fit more children. 🙂 I’d also pay off the debts of my immediate family and secure their homes.

I would have to figure out how to donate a large sum to the church. I’d have to take my time on that. I’m still getting to know my diocese.

There are several charities I’d like to support.

The rest would be invested.

Throw my weight around in my parish (diocese), like so many other rich Catholics do. Offer to renovate my ugly 1970s parish church. Offer to endow many parishes with professional singers. Help out the local EF parish. Set up a foundation for job training that includes child care.

When I dream of winning the lottery, I imagine:
  • Making gifts to the Catholic school I attended, and to the Catholic schools my children attended
  • Making a gift to the Capuchins, who also educated me (though the school has since closed)
  • Making a gift to the charity supported by our regional Knights of Columbus councils, undoubtedly set up as a matching grant (to encourage the Knights to continue their support)
Should I win the $900million MegaMillions, these would probably be set up as annuities, in order to keep giving.

And. of course, I’d pay off debt and quit my job.

Hmmmm… Maybe I’d toss forums.catholic-questions.org a bone – support the costs of the servers and enhance the full-time staff, that sort of thing – If it would give me the chance to tweak the forums more to my liking 😛

You know: Maybe some more themes, merge my current and former identities (plus recover all the post and thread counts that went away with the old forum), buy moderation powers so I could re-open closed threads, tell the posters what I really think about them, then close 'em up again… 🤣😂🤣 🤑

I know someone who did win a large lottery. They taught all of their friends what to do.

First thing, tell no one. Get your attorney or trusted financial planner to put that ticket in a safe.

Next, change your phone number, change your email addresses, and if you can - move. The goal is to be where only the people you trust the most can have access to you when the news breaks.

Next step is to sit down with a solid financial planner/investment expert and have them get everything set up for you. Determine how you are going to get paid (lump sum or installments) and let the experts get it all in line.

Speak to your priest or Diocese about the donations you will be making, any contingencies you are going to attach (I am donating X for the purpose of tuition or to build a new parish building or for capital improvements for impoverished parishes or whatever).

Talk to your family members. Tell them “I am going to give each of you $X and that is all” or that you plan to give them nothing. SET the expectation before you even claim the prize.

Last thing to do is claim the prize and see your face on TV.

I once won 9 dollars at the loto and that is exactly what I did - I paid my credit card debt with it even if it’s such a small sum. That is what I told God I would do if I won something and so I did it. And if I ever win something again I will do the same. That’s because if I win is because I asked God to help me pay my debt and anything extra will be, in my case, temptation from Mamona, the demon who makes us cling to the world, so I would have to just give it away. I will give it away to the Church so they can spend it any way they see fit. I trust them, they have charities and also can spend the money on restauration of churches or even better clothes for priests, I don’t mind.
The devil has been seriously fighting and torturing me since the age of 5 in my dreams so everything related to luck that huge I will see it as a new weapon from his side against me. I envy those who have the peace of mind to actually enjoy that much amount of money, I admit.
