What would you do in this situation?

Honesty is the best policy. If I were legitimately sick or run down, I would call in sick and get some rest. If you have a virus, you could spread it to others at work. Hopefully, you have not waited until the last minute to study for your exam.
Good point. Speaking of obligations, don’t one have an obligation not to cross infect the office with potentially communicable disease? Don’t you have an obligation to your boss not to decimate his work staff with whatever crud is ailing you? Just a thought.

The way I read your original post, you said you are sick AND you have an exam tomorrow NOT that you have an exam and are using it as an excuse to fake an illness. Stay home!! No one wants (more) exposure to your germs. This is not a moral dilema. If you have been working while ill up to this point because of a need for $ or out of an overdeveloped sense of obligation, that does NOT require you in this instance to show up to work ill–esp. on the eve of an important exam. You shift can surely be filled by a substitute tonight, while your performance on the exam cannot. Go study, get a good night’s sleep and don’t be so hard on yourself.

Thanks Island Oak.

Scott, that is exactly what I was thinking too, not to mention being sick. I don’t think it’s a good idea to go to work sick, and then spread the germs…yuck. I think my boss would be much more unimpressed by that.

If you are sick then you are sick!!! If you are as sick today as pneumonia (or somthing like it) then you will probably be sick tomorrow and for several more days. It sounds like you need to 1) Call your boss and let them know 2) call your professor and let him/her know that you will need to take a make-up exam 3) get yourself to the doctor and follow the course of treatment and then study!!!

Get well or you won’t be doing much of anything!!!

This whole thread is being wildly blown out of proportion.

Sarc, stay home! You’re sick! You’re stressed! I’ve read other threads of yours, and your boss wants any excuse to fire you! Why infect everyone else who will share your breathable air???

I am a behavioral consultant in schools and I wish more parents had the responsibility to keep their children HOME when they have nasty noses, fevers, coughs and snot being blown everywhere. It’s so disgusting and it’s sooooooo contagious. Plus, it’s borderline abusive, IMO, to send your child to school when they are clearly ill and needing to rest. (Sorry for the segue.) Anyway…it applies to adults, too.

It’s just disrespectful to everyone you encounter if you leave home while sick. Stay home, recover, and get better! Chicken soup, vitamin c, lots of water and rest!!!

See this is what I meant by mentioning the media involved here with asking for opinions.

You say here that one of the reasons you want to call in sick is becuase you agree with Scott on the obligation not to expose your co-workers to your illness yet earlier you stated that you have been going to work for the past 2 weeks while you are sick.

Can you now understand why some of us may see your comments as a way to rationalize what you want to do?

Again, I do not really think this is the place to seek such advice.

I agree, were obligations conflict then we need to work them out but “calling in sick” is a lie when you are not sick or would be at work if it wasn’t the case of other obligations.

As for course work being an obligation, yes it is, to one’s self. Work is an obligation to others. So when these to conflict work should win out.

What you are talking about, finding someone to fill your shift, or talking to your boss about why you need the time off is not “calling in sick” and in this case is the way sarcophagus should go.

Exams are usually scheduled, especially big ones, so if he needs to cram, which again I think is bad, then he should have planned for this ahead of time. As he didn’t he should not lie and “call in sick”. He should call in an try to explain it and get the time off or find someone to cover for him. Other than that, go to work and do not lie.

Again, I can not believe that I am the only one who thinks this way.
I have health problems all of my life, not for one moment would I put my job above my health. If there are other important family reasons for missing work well than I call off also (saying I have a personal emergency). My priorities are my health and my family.

If she is sick stop implying that she’s sinning by calling of because if she is she wouldn’t be lying. I don’t think her work place expects a gage on how sick. I think your more irratated that she wasn’t prepared for her exam and that’s why your coming down on her.

If you’re sick, and call in and say I’m sick you are not lying, period.

We were not told that this person was sick until later in the thread and then it was that they were sick but were still going to work.

So then we think to ourselves, “well what has changed then” and the answer appeared to be, “I’ve got an exam”, not that I am sick (which they were for the past 2 weeks but it wasn’t an issue then). They did say that they are worse today, which if that is the case then go to the doctor and do as he advises but why come here for our opinions when you are going to ridicule those who disagree with you and your “supporters”?

I don’t know if this is the right place…but I need an opinion.

I feel so bad about this, I hate calling in sick to work but…

I feel like i was run over by a truck…plus I have a HUGE exam tomorrow that, if I go to work tonight, I’ll have no time to study for…would you still go to work or would you call in sick?

I know this sounds trivial, maybe even easy to answer, but I just can’t figure it out.

Thanks!!

I think you missed this byzcath…unless you didn’t know I meant being sick when I said i felt like I was run over by a truck.

Sarc, take the night off. I think I remember when you called in sick the last time–you agonized over that decision as well, didn’t you? You’re a very hard working person, and the fact that you’re concerned about the situation speaks volumes to me. If you think your boss would be understandable, call and explain the situation, and why you’re not coming in. If the truth would set him over the edge, simply say that you need to use a sick day. An understanding boss would want you to take the night off. My situation is a little different, as I get paid sick days, but there’s been times that my boss has kicked me out of the office to go home and rest. Hopefully your next job will be better!

Again this media is not the best place to express things like this nor a good place to ask opinions on private matters especially if you are going to get upset with those who happen to have an opinion that goes against your own.

I have been unable to find the definition of sick that matches “I feel like i was run over by a truck”. I did not miss this. I took this to mean you are feeling stressed and over whelmed.

How about this.

The next time someone posts asking for opinions on a private personal matter and they only want to hear those opinions that support their choice, why don’t you say so in the begining then you will not have to deal with those of us who might disagree.

I wasn’t getting upset, I don’t know where you are getting this idea. You kept telling me that I was lying, I was trying to show you that I wasn’t. Maybe you should refrain from calling people liars?

if you were the business owner, i think you would feel lied to…
what do you think?

Ok if she was lying. But SHE IS SICK and it sounds like to me exhausted as well. Give the poor girl a break.

Byz Cath, I hope that you are not so serious all the time. This is not a ‘grave’ matter…life isn’t so dang serious!!

When you feel like you’ve been “run over by a truck” it usually means you feel like ka-ka. Whether you are exhausted physically or mentally, coughing or sneezing or throwing up…you are sick.

Why should he go to work and supress his immune system even more? Even if he wasn’t “physically sick”, when you keep pushing yourself, you run the risk of becoming sick, of compromising your health.

Hey Sarc~~CALL IN!! I’ll even do it for ya if you want 🙂

Take care, get some rest, and study!!

Ok, lets take sarcophagus out of this as I think I understand what she is saying now and really have no issues with this other than what I have stated. Lets just talk abstracts now.

No life isn’t always that serious, but Faith is.

You say that this is not a “grave” matter. I think that is debatable. I think it is a serious matter because a lie like calling in sick to work when you are not sick for the sole purpose to do something else is being intentionally deceitful.

I think the paragraphs from the Catechism shows that even when not a mortal sin lieing is still a serious matter.

No one should run around intentionally commiting any sin, even if it is venial. Doing so opens the door to more serious things.
When you feel like you’ve been “run over by a truck” it usually means you feel like ka-ka. Whether you are exhausted physically or mentally, coughing or sneezing or throwing up…you are sick.
I have never heard this form of slang used when one is sick. I have heard it used when one is stressed or feeling physcial effects after exercise or some other physical exertion.

Again, never heard it used for an illness.

If you’re sick, you’re sick. Call in sick and don’t go spreading your germs around. I HATE it when sick people are so proud of dragging themselves to work and making everyone else sick.

Stay home, take care of yourself, and don’t let judgemental morons make you feel guilty for doing that which is perfectly moral and good.

To me, it is called “calling in sick” but if you have sick leave, you can use it however you want. You only get so much, so use it wisely, but use it. If you have a job where you just don’t get paid if you call in, then you have to decide if it is worth it to you not to go. If you are going to fail a big test if you go to work, then don’t go. I’m sure you are a stellar employee. Don’t sweat it.

Do the right thing, go to work and ASK GOD TO HELP YOU ON YOUR EXAM.
