This is a very pertinent question for me right now. On November 16th I voluntarily retired my state’s RN license. A difficult decision as I have had an active license in one state of another for 51 years. Our state renews biannually and 12/31/2020 would be the last day to do so. I’d be paying for something I doubt that could make use of at my age and in this COVID environment. Plus I would have to get the necessary CEU’s which is another expense. So practicality won out over sentimentality. Then at the end of that week my state’s Board of Nursing sent out a letter to all nurses saying that nurses with retired or lapsed licenses who were in good standing with the BON would be able to participate gratuitously in vaccine administration if they wanted to volunteer their services. I was known as the Shot Lady in the doctor’s office where I worked for almost 20 years. Patients and parents would request that I administer immunizations to them or their children. This directive is of course for the COVID vaccine administration to be happening soon and into next year. If I was able to receive the Moderna mRNA vaccine in time to convert with an adequate antibody level response to COVID 19, I probably would volunteer to help get everyone in my community who wanted to immunized. To me that would be a worthwhile endeavor to perform without any pay.
