tonight while waiting for mass to start a few of the older parishers were sitting behind me totally running down own bishop and our pastor who is a wonderful priest and a great friend this really upset me they were complaining about him not celebrating mass every day asking what does he do (he does heaps) i thought how dare they attack a priest and right before mass and almost turned around to say so but i didn’t want to create an argument right before mass should i have turned around and said something? i was almost crying all during mass please pray for father chris

Melinda, I’ll pray for your priest and your bishop.
It was an unexpected situation thus natural that you didn’t respond directly. Don’t give yourself a hard time for not saying anything. It could have cause scandal if the people had reacted equally rudely towards you for reproving them!

One good thing will come out of it, extra prayer for your parish priest and your bishop, so they have you to thank for that. 🙂

God bless you, Trishie

Trishie’s right. It’s probably a good thing that you didn’t say anything. I am fiercely loyal to our priests, particularly our pastor, and am also a bit hot-headed, so I would have handled things badly, I’m sure. In fact, there have been a few times when someone has spoken ill of our pastor and got an earful from me as a result (though, fortunately not right before Mass!)

Maybe next time, during the prayers of the faithful, you can offer a prayer of thanksgiving “for our priests who work so hard” 😃

One other thing, you might also send him a note, letting him know how much you appreciate all he does. I know these guys hear a lot more complaints than they do encouragement, so it’s up to us to change that.

I’ll pray for Fr. Chris and your bishop.

I’d have to know more before commenting. Not quite enough info. But I will say that to do that gight before Mass and say it all loud enough where others can here is rude. They should keep it in private.

You did the right thing by not disrupting. I’m sure it was hard.

How sad for you, Melinda… :console: But I agree with the others. Although it must have hurt you greatly… you did the right thing, in keeping silence.

If it ever happens again… (and I pray that it does not :nope:)… you might wish to offer the pain you are feeling, to Our dear Lord… for the conversion of the people who are gossiping.

I will certainly keep Fr. Chris and your Bishop in my prayers, as well. God bless you and Happy New Year :snowing:

A suggestion (based on the fact that Christ does expect each of us to Defend our Faith, and such opportunities not not coincedience._

You could have turned around, with a smile, and said folks I couln’t help but overhear your complaints. May I suggest that if you wish to do something positive, about them, either make appoinyments or write a letter to Father… and Bishop…, both I am sure would be greatly interested in your point of view. Still smiling, however I don’t think this is the time or oalce to have such a decussion.🙂

God bless, Thanks!

PJM… Did I misunderstand the OP? I don’t think she said they were maligning the Faith, itself… but her Pastor and Bishop… as individuals. Is this the same thing? 🤷

I agree about defending the faith.

thanks everyone 🙂 i think i did the right thing not turning around because knowing me it probally would have ended in an argument but if it happens outside of mass i shall definitely tell them to stop it and i shall definitely be praying a lot more for Fr Chris and Bishop Brian :gopray:

Good question:thumbsup:

Yes, actually it is and here is why.

The “only bible” a great many people will read is how we (you and me) lead our lives in according to the principles Christ has personally demonistrated.

Now you may point out quite correctly that Jesus Himself, often was critical of the priest of His time, and correctly so. So what is the difference. They had the opportunity to explain and justify there actions, but did not.

Jesus did it directly to them as a form of instruction, not behind there backs, as a form of slander!

How bad this would / could have been if some non -Catholics overheard the conversation. It was bad enough that anyone heard it.😊

“He who hears you, hears Me, and anyone who hears me, hears the One who sent Me. he who denies Me, denies Me and the Father who sent Me.”

Noone including God Himself expect our priest, or bishops to be perfect. They too are finite Creatures of a Loving God.

But as men (and in the case of religious, perhaps women too) they have dedicated their very life’s in support of God and His gospel. They deserve at least commom respect for there office and call.

There could be in specific circumstances a justification to publically disagree with one’s priest or bishop, if they publically, and clearly make clear positions in opposotion to the RCC. This is certainly the exception, not the rule, and should be an action of last resort.

We would be obligated to respond factually, with great care and the utmost charity.

Hope this clarifies the issue for you? If not let me know and I’ll try again.

God bless you,
PJM m.c.

Very clear! Thank you so much for giving me a better way to look at it. You’re so right. God bless and Happy New Year :snowing:
