How much experience did you have with children before you decided to teach? I have a friend who adopted a baby boy when she had never even baby-sat in her life and had an awful time adjusting to the fact that her fantasy didn’t match her reality. Did you ever teach a Sunday school class or did you have siblings younger than you are? What were your expectations and daydreams about the job of teaching?
There is no sin nor shame in a decision that you have made an error and leaving one profession for another. My only caution would be that if you expect your work to “make you happy” you are imagining a vain thing. I have been a legal assistant (as secretaries are called these days) for 21 years and have worked in every type of law save the criminal law, for every type of boss, and sometimes have hated my job and sometimes have enjoyed it, but overall I like the WORK and that has gotten me through the parts I didn’t like. However, my job is what I do in order to afford to do what I like (which is motor racing journalism). If I could make a living doing that (which nobody my age can do), then I would be, I think, truly happy. But I wouldn’t quit my day job.
