There is a lady that I know who is mentally and somewhat physically disabled, although she lives on her own. She doesn’t really have family in the area. She prides herself on being independent and works a full time LOW paying job. I doubt if she gets any government assistance. Her apartment complex has coin operated laundry.

From what I have seen, she only has 1 coat and it appears that it has never been washed. I have seen people back away when talking to her due to the smell of the coat.

I have thought about going to Goodwill, buying a coat for her and giving it to her or offering to wash her coat.

I know she has accepted clothing donations before so I really don’t think she will be offended. For some reason I just feel she might be less offended by me giving her a coat than by offering to wash her coat for her.

So what would you do?

I would probably buy her a coat and say something along the lines of, “I saw this coat and thought how nice it would look with your (eyes, hair, pants, whatever) and hoped you could find a use for it.”

I would buy her a new coat that is still in style and is in good shape.
I would say I saw the coat and thought it would look great on her. Tell her you think everyone can use a spare coat. Tell her that you like to have two coats, because if you spill something on one you can wear the other until you have time to wash the soiled one.😉 I think that would give her a hint. If she didn’t like the one you bought for her maybe she will wear it while she washes the other.😃

Thank you ladies!!!

I will go the buying her a coat route. I guess there really isn’t a good way to know if offering my washing machine may offend her. I just remember when I was poor and depended on every dime I didn’t get to wash my coats, sheets, comforters much because I couldn’t afford the extra load of wash. Of course I had my parents house to drag all that to when I really needed to. It is just sad that some people don’t have family near them for things like that.
