What would you like to hear a deacon preach about?

Be yourself. Don’t be theological in the literal sense. Relate your homilies to today’s life.

But most important. Be yourself. Your posts here are thoughtful and interesting - your homilies will follow!
 
Well said,ally. We are fortunate in our diocese to have a good St. Paul Newman Center at our state college. This place is so busy. The students know that they can come here and join with others, who are faithful to Holy Mother Church. It takes a special priest to relate to college age kids. They have one there that is much loved and has been there for some time.

Show how the lesson in the readings are reflected in the dogma of the church. Use the homily as a way to catechize. Do not be afrad to say this is what the church teaches and why. Do not be afraid to mention our Blessed Mother or the Saints.
 
Live and learn, I didn’t know that deacons even preached, I’ve never seen one preach although the only deacons I’ve seen were at the cathedral and it was the bishop who said the homily.

The key to preaching is to keep it brief. Very few can keep the faithful’s attention for more than 10 or 12 minutes.

Relate your topic to *interesting *stories from your own life, but they have to be interesting. I remember a semiretired priest in my childhood that always related interesting stories from his naval career as a chaplain. Also, smile a lot, if you exude positivity the people will hear more of what you say.

Well, next Sunday I’d like to hear about how the Blessed Sacrament really is our manna in the desert of modern life.

But what I’d like to hear deacons preach about, when consistent with the readings, is SIN, and MONEY (tithing).

We don’t hear enough about those two subjects, to my mind.
 
I for one would like to see some apologetics at Mass. I rarely hear a priest or deacon take the Bible readings and use them to show what Catholicism teaches.

So many Catholics haven’t a clue what their own church teaches, which is why, when Scott Hahn (pre-conversion) was trying to convince Catholics to leave, he said it was like shooting fish in a barrel.

One lady in our parish is in her 70’s, very devout, attends daily Mass. Yet she thought Jesus did not exist from the beginning, that God the Father had created Him. We set her straight, but good grief! How can you attend daily Mass and miss something that basic?

I would like to see something along the lines of “If someone approached you and told you that everything concerning faith and morals has to be in the Bible, how would you respond? Or how would you defend the doctrine of Purgatory? Salvation by faith and works?” In other words, every time there’s a Bible verse in the Mass readings, one that Protestants twist and misconstrue, I’d state very clearly what the Catholic position is and why we believe it.

Every member of your congregation should be able to defend their beliefs. You never know when someone from another church is going to ring their doorbell.
 
Preach Truth with Love. No watered down messages. Do not feel you have to entertain to preach. I agree with the above poster - Apologetics.
