Hi All,😃

I was wondering…

If an unbeliever came up to you and said I know nothing about christianity and asked…

“What is the most important truth I should know about christianity?”

What would you tell that person?

There is one God - the Father, the Almighty, Creator of Heaven and Earth.

This is the first truth we acknowledge in our Creed so I figure it must be one of the most important. It is the foundation upon which the rest is built on - we can’t have Christianity without God.

I’d tell them that God loves them very much, and that Jesus died for their sins.

WOW. The very thing happened to me before Christmas, when I was flying home from Canada for my vacation. I had a transit in Germany and a young woman who happened to be still fresh and alert after 10 hours of overnight travel planted herself next to me, and wouldn’t stop talking and asking questions. She asked me what my religion was - I told her I was a Christian. She asked “What is the main teaching of your religion?”

Was I baffled. Very lightheaded with lack of sleep and jetlag, all I could tell her was that it was very hard to answer this question, but I came up with “love for our neighbours” and the “sanctity of human life in this world and the next”, or words to that effect - I vaguely explained what charity is about and what it means to defend life, but seeing that she had the intelligence of a three year-old, and I had the mental clarity of a drunken elephant, I did not go into the Incarnation and the Trinity.

I think I failed miserably at the job… 😊

Jesus Christ has risen from the dead.

To bring some light to a non-believer about our faith is to say something as simple as possible:

we are to love God and to love one another - that is what God commands us to do, and to do that, we ought to do the following:

[whereinthebible.org/Matthew 25:35-40](http://www.whereinthebible.org/Matthew 25:35-40)

I wouldn’t go too far into something that he has so much problem for him to understand - When he gets the idea about loving, he will be opened up to other or more important things about our faith.

God, and only God, is the answer to your deepest longing. And out of pure and perfect love he seeks to bring you into his divine life for ever and ever.

Jesus is the Messiah.
Wouldn’t that answer raise the question of what a Messiah is?

I read somewhere that Hindus-I think that was the religion- sometimes accept Jesus as savior not understanding that becoming Christian means that you have to give up other Gods.

You would think that the Op’s questioin would be easy, but if someone really had no prior knowledge of Christianity and did not understand that there was just one God, this could be difficult to explain.

:amen:

Why didn’t I think of that? 😦

God Bless,

That God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son so that whoever believes in Him will not die, but have eternal life. Or words to that effect.

Yeah if you only get “one” thing gotta go with 3:16.

But I like “Jesus Christ is risen from the dead” too.

(Maybe better. I haven’t seen it at football games.)

I am bored, so I am going to play devil’s advocate and make this difficult.😉 All for him, didn’t say what religious background the person was from. So let’s say that the person asking the question doesn’t know that there is one God.

“Which God’s son is Jesus?” or worse yet, “Hey, Can I worship him along with all the other Gods?” or “Eternal life, do you mean reincarnation?”

Oh yes! Read some other threads here and even from Christians you will be amazed what kind of ideas may pop up.

Hey, is Jesus part of a three headed God? you told me about the Trinity, and it sure sounds like that.

Was Jesus man only? Man and God? What is he now?😉

Did Jesus have 2 natures? 2 wills?

What about essence and energies?

Is all this stuff in the bible? Is it really clear? 😉

This could be an endless list really.

NO knowledge of Christianity?? The first question I would ask is what box was this person locked up in their whole life. It is almost impossible for anyone on this planet to not have some knowledge of Christianity if they had enough info and intelligence to ask about it. That information may be miniscule, distorted, incomplete, or whatever, but there would be something.

The first thing I would say is “Why do you ask?” or “Why do you want to know?” Then I would ask them to tell me what they know about Christianity already.

These two questions would give me some background, something to build upon (no matter how small or erroneous), and a basis for what direction I would go. Without it, it is like the very little girl who asked where babies come from and her parents gave her an entire sex education lesson, when she would have been satisfied at that point to know they came from the hospital.

Along with all that, the most important thing I would try to leave this person with is that with Jesus we have new life – a life that makes sense about and frees us from the senselessness and pain of this life, and leads to eternal life with the all-loving God.
