What would you tell your younger self if you could?

I’d say:

"Don’t spend so much time thinking about girls, trying to impress them, or getting them to like you. Many men have wasted their time, ruined their lives, and made themselves unhappy by being obsessed with the opposite sex. Most of the girls you moon over aren’t interested, many of them aren’t worth it, and it’s just by being friendly and yourself that you’ll attract the decent ones anyway. This is how you’ll find a sweet and interesting girl. Take your time.

"Sex is wonderful, but in many ways overated as a source of happiness. Outside of marriage it is wrong and unless you have no conscience, it complicates your life and your relationships for the rest of your life. Wait for marriage: you will not be any less of a man if you do.

"Try to have fun, but don’t be foolish or reckless. Drugs are for losers and fools, and if you are either you probably shouldn’t be drinking either. If you are temperate, having a beer with good friends or other decent folks is a good thing to do occasionally. Don’t imitate the popular when they are being crude, immoral, inconsiderate or reckless.

"Eat what you want, but not too much. Get plenty of sleep, but don’t lay in bed too long. It leads to brooding and laziness. Practice good hygiene and dress appropriate to each situation.

"Read as many good books as you can, but do other things as well. Expand your interests and you will meet interesting and nice people. Go outside when you can, especially if the weather is nice. Television and video games are OK, but they will stunt your intellectual growth if that’s all you do, or even if it is your automatic default when you are bored. Don’t believe everything you hear, especially in school or in the media. If something disturbs you or doesn’t seem right, verify with a reliable source.

"Be moral, but do not be a prig. People will (eventually) respect you for the first, but will avoid you if you are the second. Avoid viewing pornography and gratuitously violent images. They will stay in your mind forever whether you want them there or not and it will permanently scar your psyche.

"Learn to laugh at yourself: the earlier in your life the better. Learn to take (and give) a little gentle and good-natured tweaking. Don’t take offense easily. Thin skinned people are unhappy people, and unhappy people are unattractive. Everybody isn’t out to get you: most people are more pre-occupied with their own concerns than with you.

"Be respectful of older people, weaker individuals and creatures and those that are a little strange to you. I wish I could take back many a thoughtless thing I said in my own youth.

"Don’t wait until later in your life to embrace your Faith and draw close to God. It will give you a ground and a compass for the tough times that will inevitably come. Pray a little in some manner everyday. Read the Bible every day. Don’t miss Mass. Arrive a little early to recollect yourself, and don’t be the first one out the door. Learn as much as you can about your Faith and share it with those that know less than you. Your faith is a gift that should be shared with those who have no faith or who struggle. Be patient with the struggling.

"Love your country and be a good citizen. Even though you are a minority * recognize the fact that MOST people in our country mean well and, until proven otherwise, will usually judge you by the content of your character rather than the color of your skin. Don’t buy into the rhetoric of hate or resentment: it accomplishes nothing and will only make you bitter and unhappy. Consider serving your country in some way either in the military or otherwise. Visit other countries if you can and you will come to understand you are immensely blessed to live here.

“Value your friends, but value your family more. Respect your parents while you still have them. Don’t allow barriers to grow between you and your siblings and other relatives. Be a sterling example to your children; if you fail sometimes, apologize and start anew. Love and cherish the girl you marry. She has given up a lot for you and you should always treat her tenderly as a precious jewel and God’s gift to you.”*

Always stay faithful to what is taught by The Holy Catholic Church and you will not go wrong.

Oh I’d tell him, in the womb if possible, fall in love with JESUS as quickly as you can. forget everything else since everything else will fall into place as you do just that. So much of my life I’ve been on wild goose chases and only now (at seventy!) have I discovered the purpose of life, a love affair with JESUS.

Oh I would tell myself, in the womb if possible, have an intimate love affair with Jesus as quickly as you can. I have spent so much of my life on “wild goose chases” and have now (at seventy!!! ), I feel, discovered the true purpose of life. Still “better late then never”

I would say -

“You may not realize this now, but your parents are actually ALWAYS right. Listen to them”

lol

Look, kid – it’s not going to be like this forever. You will eventually get out of there.
In the meantime, get some regular exercise. Lay off the junk food: you’ll be glad you did.
Also, save some money for the long term. You’ll be glad of that too.
That’s pretty close to what I would tell me, too! Not the exercise and junk food bit, but the part about it getting better and needing to save money.

If I could go back to relive HS, I would do so many things differently.

You are different, because you suffer from SSA. However, God doesn’t create you this way. No matter what, God loves you.

You are different, because you’re not like others. Your dad is Japanese and you should be proud of it although your classmates make fun of this fact. Trust me, 20 years from now, they will wish to have a Japanese Dad.

Learn to speak Chinese and Japanese because these languages will be very useful when you want to find a job and learn to play piano too, because you will not have time when you grow up.

However, please don’t act out your SSA inclination because you would never ever find love that could fit the hole in your heart. Only God’s love could do it. Besides that, by doing so, you will not be able to answer God’s call to be His priest, you will regret it at the age of 21. And you’ll just add more wound to you inner self.

Jesus is the perfect role model, you can know about him by reading the gospels. the first four books in the New Testament. No one in the world could be a better role model than Jesus.

Friends are important, but family are more important. Love them more than anyone else. Your dad loves you very much, although he never express it verbally. Love him, because you only have him for awhile only.

However, if you don’t want to listen and decide to walk away from God. Please remember that “God loves you”, He will never leave you alone and he’ll be faithfully waiting for your return, just like the Father in the story of the prodigal son.

I love you, Vince and God loves you too…

Is there anything you would tell your younger self if you had the chance? Something regarding God or life or anything in general, something where you really had to learn the hard way?
YES! Chase your dreams in NYC. I guess I still can. Maybe I should… I will have to have a talk with dh because this post really got me thinking about past regrets not doing what I always wanted to do. And when it comes down to it, it’s not too late.

I am tired of working a job I don’t enjoy, wasting my life away. Good thing I don’t have kids because if I did, I couldn’t change my life as it is now… I only got one life to live, I am going to enjoy it, because when it comes down to it, I am not happy. I have to make the change.
