What you let your child do this?

Well in all honesty, it’s because of the advice I have gotten from priests along with my own co dependce.

The priests make it out that it will improve if I give him more sex or if I just hang in there and pray more. I’ve tried to explain that this has been a consistent theme. Not just a blip on the radar.

Your priest means well, but is not a psychologist. He does not understand he is dealing with a person with what is likely an undiagnosed mental illness of some kind, personality disorder at the least. And, of course he only has glimpses of the problem. In prior posts you have described your husband as a wonderful father. Um, you are kidding yourself there and likely have expressed these skewed views to the priest, which would influence his advice.

You need to protect your son, and unfortunately that may mean limiting his time with his father by whatever legal means necessary. I would try to obtain full custody and supervision based on his mental and financial capacity, and I would insist on psychological examinations as part of proceedings.

Time to talk not only to a priest but a lawyer.

Does anyone have any suggestions for parenting books etc for elementary school kids?

I have been in the back seat on parenting with our son because of my work schedule.

My son is a good boy at the root. However, I see red flags and I have been trying to change. I appreciate any advice.

Problems: He wants us to buy $$$ cars etc. He often seems ungrateful. He’s too blunt and says rude things sometimes. (At his bday party… He told one of the kids he didn’t like the gifts he got). Husband got him to start collecting coins. That is good… But now he’s obsessed with money. He will literally go through stores scouring the store for loos change on floors. He does not share well. Yesterday I asked him for a bite of his food and he smiled and gave it to me. I thanked God that my work is starting to pay off.

He is an excellent student. But often brags to other kids.

I have started requiring that every week we go together and get hot meals for homeless people and we go as a pair to deliver it. It seems to help him understand. However this am we tried it and he said he wasn’t using any of HIS money to help feed them.
That saddened me. I will say he constantly talks about how much he lives being with me. He will tell me that dad is “awkward and doesn’t like to laugh with him”. He will be pretty well behaved when we are together alone.

I have requested that daddy say prayers with him before bed. (I’m working at that time) but it doesn’t appear to be happening when I’m not home.

He is now talking about the acting stuff and how he wants to buy a rolls Royce with his acting money cause daddy said he could make millions.

And when I say… No sweetie… You need to take drama classes first etc… He looks at me as the party pooper.

Some of these things are probably normal for an 8 year old. But I’d take ANY advice you could give me. I don’t have family nearby and my mother is not very helpful with our son. Even though I have asked repeatedly for her help.

I have a basic question for parents. If your spouse wanted your 8 year old to get into acting to make money and the child says THEY want to do it (because spouse said they’d make a lot of money) … Would you agree to it?

Not talking about drama class. Child getting an agent.

Thoughts?
Sure, absolutely.

I would avoid the agent thing and encourage said child to audition for local plays and commercials and things like that. 90% of child talent agencies are a complete scam.

I don’t share these things with many people and reading this scares me.

You really don’t believe any of that is typical for an 8 year old?

Do you have any suggestions on books etc for me? I want to change the tide. I really wants boy to be the best he can be…
None of those things are normal for an eight year old.

First of all do some research into lives of child actors. Most of these stories are sad and often disturbing. Parents are supposed to provide for and protect their children because kids do not have the wisdom needed to make important life decisions. Say no to acting for your child since it is almost always a bad idea. 😦

No. Not at all.

I can suggest Mary Ann Budnick’s books on raising happy children. And Dr Ray’s books on child rearing.

I will check that out… Thank you.

I hope that DH will read it with me.

I’m scared about my son… I want him to have the best upbringing possible.
