Whatever happened to keeping the Sabbath day holy?

I’m not sure what it means anymore to keep the Sabbath day holy. It seems our society has completely lost the notion of Sunday as a day of rest. Other than going to church, Sunday seems no different than any other day. Even in our own religion, I never hear anything taught about what it means to keep the Sabbath holy. Obviously we are supposed to go to mass, but is that it? Is that all it means?

For example, I have multiple kids in recreational soccer. Once they get to age 14, all their games switch from Saturdays to Sundays. Now we run crazy trying to get them to their games all over the place and still get to Mass. We work Mass around soccer games. It seems like it should be the other way around. I want my kids to be able to participate in activities, but it seems those activities all too often take over your life.

It just feels wrong. I think we’ve lost sight of what the Sabbath is supposed to be. I think it’s supposed to be more than just going to church. Anyone else feel the same?
 
I agree with you. Read the account of Our lady’s apparition at La Salette France for a great catechesis on keeping Holy the Sabbath.

Also remember, what the Church drops, the world picks up. If we have dropped keeping holy the Sabbath, the world will make it just another day. We all need to take an individual stand against Sunday soccer practices, or scouting events, or dance recitals, or anything else that competes with the reverence reserved for the Lord’s day. The world will only take the Sabbath from you if you allow it.
 
I agree also. Plus it’s is such a sad and terrible challenge for families and sporting activities. People just treat Sunday as a day off, so of course you’re available. Although, if the whole family attends (logistically difficult) it could be treated as time spent with family.

I have my own issues about this. I’m the only one on my crew who is church-going and and yet I’m the only one to get Sundays scheduled into my job. However, I can still attend a 7:00 pm Mass. It’s just that - grrrr - it seems that nowadays Sunday is treated just like any other day.

P.S. I’m old enough to remember when everything except convenience stores were closed on Sunday. I wish we could go back to that.

You must be doing indoor right now? If a number of the games are on Sunday, you can go to Sat. mass. CYO scheduled Sat and Sun. Since it was 5-8th, I think they scheduled this to avoid having games during the week. In door soccer has only so much time and room and the younger kids are scheduled on Sat with the rest on Sunday. do all your kids want to play soccer equally? Back to the Sabbath, I am not sure what people really want.
Lets say you go out to eat on Sunday, well then someone has to work for you to eat out. this is also true about shopping, getting groceries, getting gas for your car. If you do all these things on Sunday, then someone had to work in order for you to do that. It is easy to look at sports and think that is wrong but then go out to eat. I work in a hospital and we obviously are open on Sunday as well. When you choose for your kids to do sports, there probably will be games on Sundays do to scheduling and the limits of trying to fit everyone in on Saturday or during the week.
 
I work at a hotel, so it’s not like we can just tell all the guests to check out on Saturday night and not let anyone check in again until Monday. The only people who get weekends off are people with really high seniority with the company. I do the best I can to get to Mass on the weekends, but it’s not always possible.
 
Your kids are in a soccer league that schedules games on Sunday mornings? What is that, Satan’s Soccer Society? I would get my kids out of that ASAP. There is nothing wrong with recreation on Sunday, but you have a responsibility to set an example of Christian living to your children. Don’t ask why ‘society’, ‘other people’ don’t do something. You are the parent, the responsible one.
 
it is totally hypocritical to point at kid’s soccer on Sunday and call it Satan’s soccer when one most likely goes home after mass on Sunday and sit and watch professional football which IS played on Sunday and no one squawking about that. So it is ok for professional football to be played on Sunday but not ok for some in door recreation team to play on Sunday? What do you think would happen if some professional football player states that he can’t play on Sunday? He would be out of a job. Do the people who seem to be upset about kids sports on Sunday ever go and watch a movie on Sunday? That mean someone had to work at the theater to keep it open. Do people go out to eat after Sunday Mass? Well then someone had to work in that restaurant in order to you to have your day of rest with your family. I think that if people want to point fingers at kid’s sports then they need to start and look at everything they do on Sunday and I bet that they do a whole lot more things that cause someone to work on Sunday that some in door soccer game. I know of many Catholic run businesses that are open on Sunday. Do you think that they should be closed on Sunday in keeping with this kind of thinking? There are many Mass times starting from Sat evenging to Sunday evenging. I know of 7pm Mass where I live.

It’s not just soccer and Sundays. Ever wonder how many people attend the vigil Mass so they don’t have to get up Sunday morning, or so they don’t miss a football game?
 
Im a nurse and have to attend mass whenever I can. I was given the option by management to have every Sunday off but I assured them as long as I could attend mass once a week I was happy. So far I have been successful 🙂

My job (Monday through Friday) requires that I be there rather early in the morning. I enjoy sleeping in and will often attend the Saturday vigil mass so that I don’t have to get up on Sunday. Are you suggesting that this is sinful?

Not me at all. The time you attend at Mass is up to the person, when they can go etc.
The main point is that you do go and not when. Questioning motivations of why someone goes when they go to Mass should be none of anyone’s business. Adjusting when you attend Mass due to work, travel, activities is not lessening of it’s priority but making Mass attendance a priority and the opportunity to go to more than one service is a big plus. I work every other weekend on midnights and have sports activities and we have never missed Mass, it is our priority no matter what.

You seemed to miss the part where I was asking about those who didn’t want to get up on Sunday morning or wanted to watch football instead. I made no mention of those you might have more valid reasons.

Oops. I read the post wrong. Yes if you attend the vigil only because you want to sleep in, you have to wonder if you are putting your sleep ahead of God.

Well, you can wonder all you want. I’m still going to the vigil Mass so I can sleep in on Sunday.

Just out of curiosity, why do you think parishes offer a vigil Mass?
 
I do keep the Sabbath holy.

I deliberately do all of my housework on Saturday, and on Sunday, I go to Mass, and that’s it. The rest of the day I don’t do work. I do cook dinner but other than that I read books, some Scripture or Catholic literature. Even if I don’t get the cleaning all done and the house is a mess, I still don’t clean.

Others can do as they please with not judgment from me of course, but this is one area I seem to do well in.
 
I agree .There is no more to keep the Sabbath day from personal commitments to a job it seems I always have to do something on Sunday .Once there was a time when nothing was done on the sacred day .Nowadays anything goes ,I find it pathetic .I guess it comes from different religions and beliefs are erroding the holy days.

I remeber when only hospital workers and police officers were the only one that had to work Sundays. Conveneince stores closed around 6pm on Saturday evening. Miss those days. I truly believe companies can make their money and take care of their customers while still being closed on Sundays. It wasnt that long ago that it was just a given, if you needed something you got it by Saturday afternoon or wait til Monday morning. But one company chose greed and opened on Sundays and all other companies felt compelled to follow suit or lose revenue.

The only way the Sabbath can be regained as it was once intended is for us Christians to take a stand (I am preaching to myself here as well). Instead of support a company one day (Chic fil A, for example) for doing the Christian thing. We should patronize these places often, Chic fil A, Hobby Lobby, etc. Also we should avoid shopping, eating out etc on Sundays. Mothers Day dinners can be celebrated on Saturday night, lol. We as parents need to let our schools know lil Johnny or Susie will not be in any sports that insist on practice or games on Sundays. But we have to be firm when we take a stand and not sporadic.

It wasnt that long ago when we were not so consumed by our things we had time to be with our families. I have just accepted a new job that will require me to work both Saturdays and Sundays until I can gain enough senority to bid for a better position. I do not like it one bit, but alas I have to support my family. But while working a secular job that schedules me on Sundays is a requirement I as a Christian can impact the secular world in other ways and inspire my friends to do the same. Gas up the car on Saturday, pack leftovers to work on Sunday, do not patronize stores or restaurants on Sunday…together we can retake the Sabbath day.

Unfortunately Christians have given in as well? We eat out on Sunday after Mass, we shop our local WalMart, etc.
