Agreed. i know a lot of Christians who reject James!🙂
Really! I dont know anyone who rejects James:eek:

Many of the people I know are cafeteria bible believers. They pick and choose what they can handle I suppose. I personally would like to get rid of the whole submission to the husband Scriptue.😦 Oh well, since I cant I am struggling to obey God’s Word.:o

I should say this includes protestants and catholic friends of mine.

I’m not familiar with that man’s work but regarding the question, “how does one distinguish whether Catholic teaching is consistent with scripture” is to examine the premise by 1) identifying the teaching, 2)going into scripture.

Every teaching I am familiar with comes from scripture, in most every teaching document on the topic cites the scripture it draws from. Then show them scripture that supports the teaching.

When anybody disagrees with you, you show them evidence. If they refuse to believe what is right in front of their eyes then they reject reason, they reject truth.

Presentation is important. If you’re on the streetcorner raving or if you write a 30,000 word post on the internet in garbled English you’re not presenting them with the evidence.

The same process is for Catholic teaching, incorrect ideas on the origin of life, which school has the better football team.
What do you mean by “incorrect ideas on the origin of life”.

Well, no one reviewed the draft of that feedback to correct some grammatical errors.

But if it is incoherent, click on that weird picture in my signature and read that paper. Tell me if it is incoherent or not.
When I was an evangelical it was just an easy way to distinguish between “us” and “them” during the necessary practice of compartmentalizing others.
I think you got it right on the mark! It is merely another way for Christians to promulgate their version of Christianity as the correct one. I think the Sarfati quote highlights that well… He also acts like that towards theistic evolutionists.

I have no idea what this term actually means, but the Catholics here have heard this term used by Protestants to imply that Catholics are not “Bible-believing Christians”. How prevalent is the phenomenon of Protestants promoting themselves as “Bible-believing Christians”.

.
I was evangelical Protestant for 20 years, and I heard the term “bible believing Christian” used to describe Christians who believe in the inspiration and inerrancy of Scripture (which would certainly include Catholics, since that is Church teaching) as opposed to many mainline Protestants who deny inspiration/inerrancy and pretty much believe only what they want to believe from the Bible while using liberal amounts of white out on the parts they don’t like:)

A bible Believing Christian is a “christian” that worships the bible instead of God.

:bigyikes:  I consider myself a Bible-believing Christian, and I certainly do NOT worship the Bible. 😦 I only worship God!

I bleive it is generally a term used by Evangelicals who ignore 2,000 years of teachings and traditions in favor of their own personal interpertation of Scripture.
To which this now-Catholic former evangelical replies: BINGO!
(That’s my favorite Catholic theological term! LOL)

It IS also used to imply that Catholics don’t adhere to scripture.
(Been there done that, thankfully God is merciful!)

No. That’s a “Bible worshiping” Christian. 😛 A Bible believing Christian is one who professes the teachings of holy scripture.

Now back to the OP, how does one distinguish whether the Catholic teachings are consistent with Scripture. How do you people answers Sarfati’s objections if he argues that Papal authority, purgatory, saints, sacraments, etc. are all unbiblical.
Just about any teaching is consistent with some part of Scripture. Where the Catholic tradition shines is that it is consistent with ALL of Scripture. Don’t get dragged into petty fights over details. Define the terms first. All the bible verses in the world can’t help if Papal infalability is understood to mean: the Pope always wins at roulette or if the veneration of the saints is understood to mean: worship man rather than God.

There may be a way for you to single-handedly lead every Protestant home, but for now I’d recommend you cherry pick. Just educate anyone who’s interested and let the HS do the hard stuff. Personally I’ve found that questions about prayer candles and the Blessed Virgin in toast are more pressing questions in most peoples minds.

Who is Sarfati?
Some guy who misrepresents people who disagrees with him such as Catholics and scientists such as Gerald Joyce. For example:
Sarfati:
The main feature of [Gerald Joyce and David Bartel’s] research is that they have already assumed the conclusion…That is, they assume a materialistic origin of life by faith, and are merely trying to work out some remotely feasible scenario to make their faith seem reasonable.
Nope, Joyce does not have any faith at all, and that includes religious faith. To put it another way, Professor Joyce has as much religious faith as Ash Ketchum. Well, this is not unusal to expect in Joyce’s case as he is a scientist. There is no evidence that Joyce has any faith at all.

He also misrepresents science too… well, he is a young-Earth creationist.

I have faith in science. Sometimes when my wife doesn’t have faith (as demonstrated by her fear of bathtub sharks and skepticism of evolution) I tickle her and ask her “who has faith in science?” I keep tickling her until she says"I have faith! I have faith – in science!" Doesn’t Professor Joyce have that kind of faith in science too? Ash does.

I have faith in science-I dont, however, have any faith in their abiltiy to answer questions on faith , morals and the origin of the universe. Peter Singer is a perfect example about how morally screwed up one gets when they depend on sciecne alone.

The term “Bible believing Christian” from my experience always indicates a non-Catholic Christian. One who holds to the bible only or sola scriptura as mentioned by others. Although I would like to mention that Catholics not only believe in the Bible. Catholics depend on the Apostolic Oral Tradition teachings handed down to us from Jesus and his Apostles to interpret the Scriptures, another words an interpreter the Magesterium of the Holy Apostolic Catholic (Universal) Church. It has been my experience that Catholics not only hear the scriptures at every Mass, especially standing at the hearing of the Gospel. The Catholic Church live out the scriptures literally, for example the (Eucharist) commandments of Jesus. The Catholic Church is responsible for putting ( canonizing ) the Bible together in the first place. So for those who believe in the bible would look to the Catholic Church for giving the bible to all Christians and its intrepetation. And yes, all dogmas and teachings of the Holy Apostolic Catholic Church can be found in scripture and the oral Tradition of the Apostles of Jesus our Savior who bids all, Peace be with you.

Dialogue and discourse require using words that have defined meanings in which all parties understand what it means. After reading this discourse, I don’t believe that a definition that is definite in meaning has been agreed to except in the most broad interpretation- It is a person who believes that the Bible is the Word of God. Thus, it excludes only those who assert that it is not the Word of God would not be a “Bible-believing Christian”. Unless somebody knows of a Christian religion that denies the Bible is the Word of God, it is a redundant descriptor (ala using the adjective “most” in front of the word “unique”). Redundant qualifiers are not to be used in intelligent discussion. Thus, until someone points out a Christian faith of any significance that denies that the Bible is the Word of God, I vote that it be struck from CAF:D .

Hi,

I guess Ive never thought of it before. I am a bible believing christian. What it means to me is that I believe the bible to be 100% truth from God written to us so we know how to be more Christ-like in our walk with the Lord. That probably sounds simple but I do believe it is that simple for me anyway.😃
It’s simple but it says it all. 😃 👍
