I am making a effort to go to mass as much as I can every week. I work Crazy hours so at the Parish by my Car Dealership I work at has Communion Service every weds at 12pm. I can not take part in the Eucharist yet since I am still in RCIA. Is this the same thing as a regular mass? Thanks for the help.🙂

It’s probably a Liturgy of the Word with Communion service. You’ll hear the scriptures of the day, and unless it’s led by a deacon, no homily. After that, there are a few prayers before communion.

It’s not “just the same as Mass,” but it should look/sound familiar.

Some communion services are “like Mass” without the consecration. Unfortunately, some are less reverent. If you cannot receive communion, then it is pretty much just the daily readings. I would advise you to go and see if you like it, if not you aren’t obligated to continue.

Communion Services basically means a Liturgy of the Word and then the Eucharist is taken from the tabernacle and the Lamb of God begins.

Its led usually by a Deacon or, if one is not available, by a lay person. It is not the same as Mass and thus never fulfills an obligation to attend Mass.

It is not the same thing. The Mass is a sacrifice, a “more perfect participation” in the celebration of the Eucharist because there is a sacramental re-presentation of Christ’s once for all sacrifice on Calvary in the celebration of Mass. There is not that re-presentation in a Communion service.

Consecrated Host are distributed to the faithful in a Communion service in a similar manner as distributed in private homes and nursing facilities by extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion, with the phrase, “This is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. Happy are those who are called to His supper.” Prayers reserved the priest are also modified in a Communion service; but the main difference is the re-presentation of Christ’s once for all sacrifice.

Communion services are offered, generally, because there is not a priest available to confect the Eucharist in the celebration of the Mass, and yet, the Church desires to make Holy Communion desirable to the faithful; she does this through a Communion service.

***NO:)

Nor does it fulfill the Weekly Obligation for Mass.

If work prohibits a Saturday evening or a Sunday Mass [NOT BY CHOICE but ACTUALLY by CAUSE] then attend a daily MAss durring the week to make up for it. God will understand this; BUT NOT missing weekly and Holy Day Mass.

A “Communion Service” is AUTHORIZED when there is an ABSOLUTE NEED and No priest is available.[This is regullary abused and one OUGHT NOT to support such illicit activity]. A Deacon, or even a carefully choses **lay MAN ***who is qualified and Trained can also with the Bishops permission or the permission of a sick priest; fulfill the role.

Communion Services ARE NOT to replace a weekday Mass!

The service has a ritual which must be followed and uses Pre-Consecrated Host.

It is common and illicit also for the lay-person to “give a homily” at such a service; but a Deacon can do so. A Lay person can read a “message” written by a priest or Bishop but not ADD to it.

The risk [and also the goal of some] is MUTE the lines of Ordiantion and permit laity to USURP and assume a role NOT gratned by Rome or God.🤷

God Bless and thanks for asking,
Pat**

A CS may be done when no priest is available. Basically, the Liturgy of the Word is done, and then pre-consecrated hosts are distributed. It is not Mass, and as others have said, does not discharge one’s Mass obligation.

Does someone who is still candidate in RCIA have a weekly obligation yet?

Communion services do take the place of daily Mass a couple days week at my parish (because we share one priest with another parish). There are two lay ministers who each take one day a week. I’ve not attended one of these yet, so I don’t know what all they do, but I would presume a normal Mass minus the Consecration.

Isn’t Good Friday technically a communion service (albeit, a very unique one)?

As a FYI,

“Keep Holy The Sabbath Day” is a Commandment. It requires everyone; Catholic and non- Catholic alike:thumbsup:

Exo. 20: **
And God spoke all these words, saying, "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. "You shall have no other gods before me.”
"You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; ** “Remember to keep holy the Sabbath day”
"You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. “
4. "Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land which the LORD your God gives you.
5. "You shall not kill. “
6. "You shall not commit adultery”.
7. "You shall not steal”.
"You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.”
9. “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; or property”
10.“you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his manservant, or his maidservant, or his ox, or his ***, or anything that is your neighbors.”

It is dear friend God’s COMMAND and does require human authority:)

God Bless you.
