Do any of you know of any good book that gives an overview of the (at least main) religious orders that are available within the Church? Someone would like to do a bit of invenstigation, and asked me if I knew of any. I said no, but that I knew where to look!
You can order from Barnes and Noble or Amazon.com, The 2009 Catholic Almanac published by Our Sunday Visitor which has various mens and womens communities in the US. Also, The Catholic Directory lists many communities. Sometimes, under various diocese you will also find listed local diocesan communities as well as forgein ones that don’t have a big main listing maybe.
For Example, I found in the Diocese of Fort Worth,Tx. the Oblate Sisters of the Church and the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Side of Jesus. Both were italian, but they are no longer listed in the Diocese. This was back in the 1970s,early 80s.
There’s also a free yearly guide that is issued in magazine style format. This year’s print edition is no longer available but you can access it online and also put in a request for next year’s edition.
