A friend who was Catholic passed away this past week. She used to send a very nice “parting gift” to people who had passed away. I do not know what this was called or how to request one to be sent to her family. It had to do with a Catholic prayer that was said daily for a certain period of time for the deceased. I know she felt this was very important and I would like to do this for her family. Where do I start? Tonight is the wake.

I’m sorry for your loss. Please accept my condolences.

Unfortunately, I am not aware of the particular custom your friend followed. I can tell you though that a fine gesture for the family of a deceased Catholic would be to arrange to have memorial Masses said for the repose of her soul. Such Masses can be offered either by a parish or by a religious community. I recommend calling the office of the parish your friend attended and asking for their help in arranging to have one or more memorial Masses offered for your friend’s repose. You may then write to her family to let them know this will be done.
