Is a statue or picture of Mary (for example) a graven image?

If the statue is actually worshiped, then yes.

If it is used as an icon, a visual reminder of the spiritual reality, then no.

graven - cut into a desired shape; “graven images”; “sculptured representations”
sculpted, sculptured
carved, carven - made for or formed by carving (`carven’ is archaic or literary); “the carved fretwork”; “an intricately carved door”; “stood as if carven from stone”

A graven image is simply a carved or sculptured image.

Graven Images
God forbids the making of graven images, which are going to be used as idols.

KJV
Exodus 20:2
2 I [am] the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness [of any thing] that [is] in heaven above, or that [is] in the earth beneath, or that [is] in the water under the earth: 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them:

** He does not forbid the making of graven images to be used as reminders of His glory for God told the Jews to make statues of cherubims of gold, and to put graven images in His temple:**

Exodus 25:8,18
8 And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them.
18 And thou shalt make two cherubims [of] gold, [of] beaten work shalt thou make them, in the two ends of the mercy seat.

1 Kings 6:11
11. And the word of the LORD came to Solomon, saying, 12 [Concerning] this house which thou art in building, if thou wilt walk in my statutes, and execute my judgments, and keep all my commandments to walk in them; then will I perform my word with thee, which I spake unto David thy father:
1 Kings 6:29
29 And he carved all the walls of the house round about with carved figures of cherubims and palm trees and open flowers, within and without.
1 Kings 7:36
36 For on the plates of the ledges thereof, and on the borders thereof, he graved cherubims, lions, and palm trees, according to the proportion of every one, and additions round about.
1 Kings 9:3
3 And the LORD said unto him, I have heard thy prayer and thy supplication, that thou hast made before me: I have hallowed this house, which thou hast built, to put my name there for ever; and mine eyes and mine heart shall be there perpetually.

2 Chronicles 3:3
3 Now these [are the things wherein] Solomon was instructed for the building of the house of God. The length by cubits after the first measure [was] threescore cubits, and the breadth twenty cubits.
7 He overlaid also the house, the beams, the posts, and the walls thereof, and the doors thereof, with gold; and** graved cherubims on the walls**.
2 Chronicles 7:12
12. And the LORD appeared to Solomon by night, and said unto him, I have heard thy prayer, and have chosen this place to myself for an house of sacrifice.
1Ki 6:27 He put the cherubim in
the innermost part of the house;
and the wings of the cherubim
were spread out so that a wing of
one touched the one wall, and a
wing of the other cherub touched
the other wall; their other wings
touched each other in the middle
of the house.

It is amazing that some Protestants don’t have statues (graven images) in their place of worship, though they do have them in their homes (figurines, etc).

Yet the Jews had graven images in their Temple, but none in their homes.

Go figure.

Then, almost all have them in their nativity scenes at Christmas time.
