What's an adage that your parents or grandparents used to say to you?

This expression by my grandpa has been on my mind a lot lately because it’s true.

“It’s drier than a popcorn f**t”.

My mother would say “Don’t count your chickens before they’re hatched.”
My father would say “If you want something done right you have to do it yourself.”

“If you want something done right you have to do it yourself.”
Personal experience has taught me that one. Hire someone at your own risk. They may or may not be competent. They may or may not listen to you. They may or may not take pride in their work – but you can bet your life, regardless of any of that, they’ll still demand to be paid.

A lot of headaches can be prevented by learning how to do things and doing them yourself.

@JanR, I feel the same way. I can live with my mistakes, but I don’t want to pay for someone else to do something poorly. I have many skills I learned rather than pay someone else. 😉

If you cant say anything nice, dont say any thing at all. Its better to be quiet.

Yours is not to question why- yours is to do or die.
I heard that one a lot, too. Arbitrary and dismissive.

Here’s another one, similar to it:

“Children should be seen and not heard.”

A classic example:

I told this hairdresser that I wanted my hair cut the same length all the way around. Clear, simple English, right? What did she do? She cut my hair shorter on the sides and left it longer in the back. So, what was it about “same length all the way around” that she didn’t understand?

“Stop flipping the light switch on and off so fast—you’ll start an electrical fire.”

(Adults never seem to like DIY strobe lights)

My grandma always says this:

“help from God and medicine from doctor” - when you are sick

“help yourself and God will help you too”

“grain by grain - bread, stone by stone - palace” - step by step

“if hill doesn’t come to you then you have to come to hill” - if something doesn’t happen by itself then you have to do something to start it

“from hollow to empty” - when someone lose their time by talking about unimportant things

When you have headache she would say “tooth also aches when it’s hollow”

When ever I’d fall or bump or other hazards of being a child…

“If you’re not bleeding, I don’t care!”. Of course, I learned quickly to explain…and I’m bleeding! 😂

Another I heard all the time…”I don’t care what Mary’s parents allow, the answer is NO!”

Mum heard a nun say once long long ago ,and she repeats it often, keep your head in the clouds ,and feet firmly on the ground.‘
And also,’in the world but not of the world ‘Is one she reminds me often .

Me after belching: “Excuse me”
Grandma: “There is no excuse for you, Adam”.

Where I live “The Devil is beating his wife”, is what it is called when there is sunshine and rain at the same time.

That phrase inspired a song I wrote. The chorus…

"Grandma told me,
Rain was the Angels crying
She always said that Thunder was the sound of the devil beating his wife
Grandma told me,
'bout the flood in '37
And all a little boy really needed to know,
She talked a lot about heaven "

(All true)
