What is so good about Good Friday?

The Baltimore Catechism taught:

Q: Why do you call that day “good” on which Christ died so sorrowful a death?

A. We call that day good on which Christ died because by his death he showed his great love for man, and purchased for him every blessing (source).

This question and answer prepared by the Baltimore Catechism, however, is based upon a modern definition of good (i.e., “having desirable or positive qualities”; source). Originally, the modern English word good derived from an Old English word for God. For example, the English phrase “goodbye” is a contraction for “God be with you” and the holiday “Good Friday” originally meant “God’s Friday.”
