Hello I will hopefully be confirmed soon and I believe I found someone willing to sponsor me for it. They were wondering what’s required of a sponsor and I’m curious to. I emailed my RCIA director the same question but she hasn’t got back to me yet. So I thought I would see what I could gather from the internet. Thanks

God bless

SPONSORS

Can. 892 Insofar as possible, there is to be a sponsor for the person to be confirmed; the sponsor is to take care that the confirmed person behaves as a true witness of Christ and faithfully fulfills the obligations inherent in this sacrament.

Can. 893 §1. To perform the function of sponsor, a person must fulfill the conditions mentioned in ⇒ can. 874.

§2. It is desirable to choose as sponsor the one who undertook the same function in baptism.

SPONSORS

Can. 874 §1. To be permitted to take on the function of sponsor a person must:

1/ be designated by the one to be baptized, by the parents or the person who takes their place, or in their absence by the pastor or minister and have the aptitude and intention of fulfilling this function;

2/ have completed the sixteenth year of age, unless the diocesan bishop has established another age, or the pastor or minister has granted an exception for a just cause;

3/ be a Catholic who has been confirmed and has already received the most holy sacrament of the Eucharist and who leads a life of faith in keeping with the function to be taken on;

4/ not be bound by any canonical penalty legitimately imposed or declared;

5/ not be the father or mother of the one to be baptized.

§2. A baptized person who belongs to a non-Catholic ecclesial community is not to participate except together with a Catholic sponsor and then only as a witness of the baptism.

From the Church’s point of view, the Confirmation sponsor is basically the same as a Godparent.

If Catholic parents selected a good Godparent, the Confirmation sponsor should ideally be the Godparent.

Personally: I view the Confirmation sponsor as a 2nd chance to pick a better Godparent.

Okay those are the requirements to be a sponsor and I think she would meet those criteria but what does a sponsor do?

the sponsor is to take care that the confirmed person behaves as a true witness of Christ and faithfully fulfills the obligations inherent in this sacrament.
Stated above in Canon Law.

Some parishes want the sponsor to go to some instruction sessions, it is nice if the Sponsor can be there for your Confirmation but it is not required.

The sponsor is one who is knows the faith, the truth of the faith, not just what they think the faith is. A sponsor shares their faith journey but does not take over your journey to relive their own. A sponsor will pray with you and for you. A sponsor should be willing to ensure you have the necessary materials such as a Catechism of the Catholic Church and a decent Catholic Bible.

Most of all a sponsor is someone who walks along with you through this. There isn’t a task list or anything like that.

Well she studied theology at university and she’s the Catholic professor at a local university so I think she has knowing the faith covered. I feel blessed that she’s willing to do it. I’ll pray that I won’t let her down. I have the CCC and I have a catholic bible except my version is NRSV which I was told isn’t the best.
