I don’t think kids use fantasy to escape reality as much as processing difficult subjects (such as death) in a “safe” enviornment. I think adults process fantasy this way as well. I’m sure I read this theory from Tolkien or C.S. Lewis.I’m sorry you feel that way. Children (don’t know what age range your saying) really don’t know the horrors of this world. At least my kids don’t. They weren’t born anywhere near 9/11, we don’t watch much T.V. They are only 4 and 2.
If my 10 year old comes up to me “wanting to escape reality” I’m afraid I would probably seek counseling for them. That is a very sad sign.
I personally, am a gamer. I understand wanting to delve into fantasy or things like that. But once the book is over or the game is done, it’s time to let the character go.
If you can’t do that, I feel sad for you.
