What’s the best biography on Saint Francis of Assisi, or at least some of the good ones? Thanks. :angel1:

The Road To Assisi by Jon M. Sweeney. Comes with a study guide. It is used as part of Formation reading.

If you like DVDs, this one is excellent:

amazon.com/Clare-Francis-Petruolo-Ettore-Bassi/dp/B001EPKKUK/ref=sr_1_1?s=movies-tv&ie=UTF8&qid=1444348569&sr=1-1&keywords=clare+and+francis+dvd

I have shown it to many friends and relatives and they loved it. My teen-aged grandchildren loved it as well.

I have this excellent book called “Francis of Assisi” which comes highly recommended. It is published by Sophia Institute Press and is by Michael de la Bedoyere.

THE LIFE OF
SAINT FRANCIS
OF ASSISI

Saint Bonaventure

Translated by
E. Gurney Salter

1904 by E.P. Dutton, New York, US.

This work is published for the greater Glory of Jesus Christ through His most
Holy Mother Mary and for the sanctification of the militant Church and her members

G.K. Chesterton wrote a biography on St. Francis. I haven’t read it, but, judging by how well he covered Thomas Aquinas, this one would probably be one of the best things you’ve read in a while.

I love your question; I think it’s great.🙂 I think I’ll read one, too, if I come across any good leads in this thread. Maybe if you pursue some of the information on the wikiquotes page, you’ll find one to you’re liking. If you do, please let me know.

I’ve been enamored of him since I was very young, and I chose him as my confirmation saint. It’s hard for me to explain why I’ve never delved into any of his biographies. I mean, I love him and I love books, but I’ve somehow never felt drawn to any of the books on him I’ve seen. I have a DVD of a film about him though, and I think others here would probably enjoy it as much as I do. It’s called The Flowers of St. Francis, by Roberto Rosselini, and it was released in1950.

I’m bookmarking this thread, by the way. Thanks, Mystrx.

I agree with several other posters that Saint Bonaventure’s life of Saint Francis is the best one. Saint Bonaventure is of course himself a saint and a doctor of the Church. He also was a Franciscan and was careful to provide details of St. Francis’s life he himself verified, some of his sources being people who personally knew Saint Francis. That said, this life is more a contribution to spirituality. Saint Bonaventure was not interested in providing a chronologically organized history of Saint Francis’ life like modern biographies of Saint Francis, though he did write about important events in the life of Saint Francis,

That makes sense. Sounds great to me…thanks!.

Oh no Problem, I love St Francis as well and have decided I need to study up more on his life.

I went and picked up a copy of The Little Flowers.

Then after that I’ll read Saint Bonaventure’s life of Saint Francis.

Thanks all! 🙂
